Your Guide to Cruise Lingo

Your Guide to Cruise Lingo

Have you ever overheard a conversation onboard and not had a clue what they were talking about? Well don’t worry; there are lots of words and phrases spoken on a cruise that you’ll probably never have heard before boarding. We don’t think you need to be fretting over that, and that’s why we’ve put together our very own cruise lingo glossary to keep you clued up on what’s what on a Royal Caribbean holiday.

Aft – Nice and easy to remember; the aft is the name used for the back of the ship. Bow – Not the kind of bow you put on top of present, the bow on a cruise is actually the name of the front of the ship. Cabin – The technical name for the room you’ll be able to relax in. Although, we like to think of our rooms as less like a ‘cabin’ and more as luxury suites. Decks – Pretty simple, each floor of your cruise ship is called a deck. I wonder which will be your favourite deck. Mine’s the one with the shops! Embarkation – Whether you’re sailing from the UK or sunny Florida, the embarkation port is where all of your holiday fun begins. FlowRider –Our surfing simulator is great for beginners who want to catch some waves during their time onboard. If your kids want to try out surfing too, then they can body board the waves! H2O Zone – Our very own waterpark your kids are bound to love. Splash around in the pool or skip and dodge the water sprinklers – it’s so much fun! Itinerary – A lot more relaxed than the word may suggest. A cruise itinerary is simply a list of the ports your cruise will be calling at during your holiday. If you’re feeling adventurous then you can add a cruise excursion itinerary to the mix too. My Time Dining – It’s exactly what it says, the chance for you to enjoy more flexibility when eating at our onboard restaurants. Can’t pull your kids away from the pool and will need dinner a little later? No problem. Similarly, if you’ve worked up an appetite you can also choose to dine earlier. Nautical mile – It’s the unit of measurement navigators use to calculate the distance travelled by the cruise ship. Port of call – Or in other words, your destination of choice. Our cruises travel to a number of fascinating and picturesque places around the world, just take your pick. Shuffleboard –A favourite amongst many cruisers, and a classic game for the whole family, Shuffleboard is one cruise tradition that’s not going anywhere in a hurry. Verandah – Another great word for your room’s balcony. A balcony will let you enjoy breath-taking views of the sea and small islands, all from the comfort of your room. Zip-Line – Ok you’ve caught me out, zip-line isn’t strictly a cruise term. But, they’re great fun and you and your family can zip-line across the ship’s top deck, taking in the amazing views of the ocean!
