Top Tips for Family Travel

By AdeleTuesday 03rd May 2016

Make the most of your family holiday with these tips. Make the most of your family holiday with these tips.

A cruise is the perfect family holiday. You can choose as many destinations as you like and there are plenty of activities to suit everyone, both onboard and on shore. Whether you’re travelling with young children, tricky teens or both, make sure your trip goes smoothly with our tip tips for family travel.

See what everyone wants to do onboard

From your 5-year-old to your 17-year-old, every family member will have an idea of how they’d like to spend their time onboard, so it’s a good idea to have a chat about it before you leave. They may want to spend their days splashing about in the pool, testing their strength on the rock climbing wall or trying as many onboard activities as they can! Take a note of everyone’s top activities, including your own, and then you can make a plan to fit it all in – the Adventure Ocean® Program comes in really handy here (more on this later). Whether they want to meet new friends in the teen-only area or they want to go ice skating*, with a solid plan, you can do it all.

Book family shore excursions

No matter which of our destinations you’ll be visiting, there are plenty of fantastic shore excursions to choose from. From snorkelling in Bermuda to pizza making in the Mediterranean, there’s a shore excursion to suit every traveller. You might spend time apart onboard, especially if your children are in the Adventure Ocean® Program, so a shore excursion is a lovely way to come back together as a family. If you’re visiting the Caribbean, join our shore excursion to Stingray City where you can meet the local stingrays, or if you’re in the Med, you can explore the sights on a guided tour of Rome. Before booking, be sure to check the age limit.

Take advantage of the Adventure Ocean® Program

For many families holidaying with Royal Caribbean, theAdventure Ocean® Program is one of their favourite parts of the experience. The award-winning program, which is available across our whole fleet, is open to children from 6 months to 17 years and is great way to keep the kids busy and help them make new friends. Babies, toddler and older children will be taken care of by our trained, talented team. Our youngest cruisers (6-36 months) can also be accompanied by an adult for our 45-minute Royal Babies and Tots playgroup sessions. Aquanauts (3-5), Explorers (6-8) and Voyagers (9-11) will take part in fantastic activities, from pirate party parades to hands-on science experiments. Teens (12-17) have a whole area dedicated just to them, with games and a chill out zone, as well as a teen-only disco called Fuel. While the kids are off having fun and meeting new people, you’ll have the chance to kick back, relax and do whatever you want!

Arrange meet-up points and mealtimes

With so much to see and do onboard, it’s a good idea to set aside some family time for the evenings. Arrange meet-up points for older children and decide upon a place where you’ll all enjoy the food. There are plenty of food and drink options to choose from, whether you want a casual NY pizza slice at Sorrento’s or a magical experience at Wonderland, the choice is yours. If you’re eating in the Main Dining Room, there’s even the option of My Family Time Dining. With My Family Time Dining your little ones, between 3 and 7, will be served first before being whisked away by our Adventure Ocean® team for fun and games, leaving you to finish your meal in your own time.
