Where should I take my summer holiday?

By DavidTuesday 08th March 2016

Have you decided where you’re taking your summer holiday? Have you decided where you’re taking your summer holiday?

Picking a summer holiday destination can be hard. There are so many places to choose from and so much to organise; a little help could really come in handy. Lucky for you, we’re here to help, with our summer holiday destination guide. From amazing art to brilliant beaches, we’ve got the inside scoop on what’s good, and where you can find it.

Rome

Best for: Food Seasoned foodies, cultured gastronomes and food lovers will meet their match in Italy’s capital, Rome. Delicious dishes and tasty treats can be found around almost every corner. Saltimbocca alla Romana (veal, prosciutto and sage cooked in white wine and butter) and supplì (rice croquettes stuffed with mozzarella and beef ragù) are two of our favourite Roman dishes. For delicious food, head to Rome. For delicious food, head to Rome.

Bilbao

Best for: Art Once a busy industrial port, the Basque Country’s Bilbao is now a cultural hub, complete with art galleries, museums and fine food. In fact, Bilbao even has its own Guggenheim, modelled after those in Venice and New York. The building – a wonderfully curved, metallic structure – houses modern and contemporary art by the likes of Jeff Koons, Richard Serra and Andy Warhol.

Skjolden

Best for: Scenery While many destinations offer beautiful scenery, nowhere is the backdrop more magnificent and more breath-taking than the Norwegian Fjords. Nestled between the Mørkridsdal and Fortunsdal valleys, at the end of the Lustrafjord, is Skjolden village. The beauty of the fjord combined with the quaint, weatherboard houses makes for a spectacular sight, unlike anything you’ve ever seen before. Norway’s Fjords will take your breath away. CocoCay

Best for: Adventure If you want to take your family on an action-packed, beach adventure, look no further than CocoCay. Our private Bahamian island resort will keep you and the kids busy for days, what with the many activities on offer. Slip and slide in the floating Aqua Park, look for colourful fishes on our snorkelling tour, or jump in a helicopter and see the island from above!

Crete

Best for: Ancient ruins Crete, the largest of the Greek Islands, is scattered with ancient ruins which are just waiting to be explored. Start with Knossós, a Minoan palace on Crete’s north coast, followed by Kissamos’ Venetian castle and Gortyn’s Roman ruins…. and that’s just the beginning. Crete has countless archaeological sites to discover, so you’ll never be short of something to do. Visitors to Crete can discover the island’s many ancient ruins. Alaska

Best for: Cooler weather If you’re looking for a holiday destination that’s a little cooler, look no further than Alaska. Temperatures during the summer months range between 10°C and 20°C, depending on where you are, making it perfect for dogsled rides, exploring glaciers and marvelling at the ice fields. What with zip-lining, whale-watching and steam trains, you and the kids are guaranteed a good time.

Grand Cayman

Best for: Beaches In the heart of the Caribbean you’ll find Grand Cayman, an island notorious for its white, sandy beaches and calm, blue waters, making for beaches which are picture-perfect in every way. While there are plenty of great beaches to choose from, 7 Mile Beach is miles(!) ahead of the rest. Here you can snorkel, go scuba diving, play volleyball or simply pick a spot and soak up the sun. 7 Mile Beach – a beach you’ll remember forever. 7 Mile Beach – a beach you’ll remember forever.
