The Dos and Don’ts of Packing

By HannahFriday 07th November 2014

In our recent What to Wear Onboard post, we used our guest’s helpful tips to create a list of what to wear for different activities, from trainers for the running track to your favourite outfit for evening entertainment.

We’ve now combined our travelling know-how with our cruiser’s top tips, to guide you through the packing process for a cruise holiday. So, before you dig out your trusty suitcase and start filling it with all of your worldly possessions, be sure to take a look at our dos and don’ts for packing.

The dos

Do pack some sun cream. Our ships travel around some of the most exotic places in the world, which usually means high UV rays. Just picture it, sitting on a stunning beach in the Caribbean and sipping a delicious cocktail, for it all to be ruined by the nasty sting of sunburn – ouch! Also, even if you’re sailing through the breathtaking, but chilly Norwegian Fjords, sun can still catch you, so cover up.   Do invest in a reading-tablet. Us book worms love nothing more than to lie by the pool with a good book in hand, soaking up the sun. To make your suitcase that little bit lighter, try swapping your heavy books for a lighter, electronic version. It’ll make your journey just that little bit easier. Alternatively, if you’re not that into technology, then head over to our onboard library!   Do bring some miniature toiletries. Sarah Mellor says it’s the first thing she packs, and we don’t blame her! Although you don’t need minis if you’re sailing from the UK, they’re always a good to have on hand. Miniature bottles of soaps, deodorants and sun cream are perfect for when you’re out and about all day, and don’t fancy lugging around huge tubs of lotions. Don’t have any? Buy some empty plastic bottles and fill them with your favourite home luxuries – voila! cocktails by the pool

The don’ts

Don’t forget your passport! I know this might sound obvious, but you’d be surprised by how many people have to make the mad dash home to pick up their forgotten passport. Keep organised, and securely pack it away in your hand luggage.   Don’t bring your MP3 player. I know it might feel like a big ask, but with live musical performances happening throughout the ship, great films for the kids and evening theatrical shows, you’ll have no need for it!   Don’t forget your phrase book. Whether you’re sailing to the stunning coastal towns and cities of the Mediterranean, or to the fantastically fun beaches of the Caribbean, it’s always good to know how to say basic phrases. From Hola (hello in Spanish) to Efharistó (thank you in Greek), the smallest effort will go a long way with the locals.   tapas in Barcelona Enjoy tapas in Barcelona

Are you ready to start packing?

Now that you’re feeling a little more prepared for your next holiday, be sure to check out the amazing activities you and your family can get up to onboard. Also, if you still have some questions about what you can and can’t bring on the ship, take a look at our recent most asked questions post, where we cover everything, from hairdryers to adaptors!
