What Life is Like Onboard Independence of the Seas®

By JoTuesday 19th September 2017

Are you intrigued by the idea of a cruise, but aren't sure what to expect from your life onboard? Find out from the people in the know: The crew onboard Independence of the Seas.

Dining Onboard Independence of the Seas®

Some of the most pressing questions people have about what life is like on Independence are about the food. There are plenty of places onboard to stop off for a quick bite to eat, or to take your time over a leisurely dinner. Head Chef Dom’s favourite spot to dine is Chops Grille. It’s a real American steakhouse, and is perfect for those who love beautifully crafted dishes with superior ingredients. Dom also revealed that steak and seafood are two of the most popular dishes on Independence, so expect the restaurant to be busy. Dom works closely with the waiting staff, so if there are any specific dietary requirements, he and the head waiter make sure you are catered for. He became a chef onboard so he could travel the world at the same time as being able to do his dream job. During his time with Royal Caribbean he has visited every continent, which means he’s enjoyed lots of different cuisines. Among his favourites are authentic, local Mexican dishes, and some of the best food he’s eaten has been in little Italian restaurants off the beaten track.

He also shared some great facts with us about the food on Independence:

  • 43,950 dishes are served per day
  • The ship carries 10,000lb of melon and 10,000lb of pineapple
  • 60,000 eggs are used a week

The Independence of the Seas® Spa

On your holiday, you should be as relaxed as possible, and enjoying a treatment or two at the Vitality Spa is sure to put you in that holiday mood. Nicola, one of the beauty therapists on Independence gave us the low-down on what makes the Vitality Spa so special, and why guests should treat themselves to a luxurious few hours here. As Nicola says, one of the best things about having a spa onboard is that you’re never more than five minutes away from treating yourself. Your holiday is a time to really focus on you, and selecting one of Nicola’s recommendations from the Signature Services is sure to do that. The Signature Services include hot stone or seaweed massages, and acupuncture. The seaweed massage is one of Nicola’s favourites; she said that more than one of her clients has described it as being sent to ‘heaven and back’. Nicola joined so she could see the world in the career she trained hard for. During her down time, she loves to watch the shows and hang out with the rest of the staff in their crew bar.

Entertainment Onboard Independence of the Seas®

Cruises are famous for two things: visiting far-flung destinations and their world-class entertainment. Onboard Independence, you’ll go to many wonderful countries, and you’ll definitely be entertained. Grease is the main show on the ship, and we managed to grab a few minutes with Max, who plays the lead role of Danny. To land the coveted role of Danny Zuko, Max had to audition with 400 other hopefuls in New York in a rigorous process that took three days. But that’s nothing compared to the month-long process it took to get the iconic Grease set installed on Independence. Because of the time it took, Max says that opening night was one of his favourite Independence memories, especially as the whole ship was decked out in 50s memorabilia. He thinks the reason why entertainment is so important to life on a cruise, is because after a long day of exploring new destinations, a fun, uplifting and exciting show is just what you need to chill out. Living together on the ship means that the cast are all great friends, and love to hang out as well as work together. Max reckons that this is what makes their performance of Grease so special. The comradery you see on stage is completely real.

What’s Life Like for Kids Onboard Independence of the Seas®

At its heart, Independence is a ship for families. There’s so much that you and your loved ones can get up to onboard, that sometimes it seems that there just isn’t enough time to fit it all in! A great way for your children to get the best out of life onboard is at our various kids’ clubs. From the tiniest sailors right up to teens, there is something for everyone, as Adventure Ocean crew member Erin knows all too well. Erin loves the amount of time she gets to bond with the kids onboard the ship and definitely hopes that the better the friends they are, the less chance she’ll get slimed at Slime Time! It’s not just sliming the crew members that the kids can get up to! They can spend their days and evenings playing sports and making new friends along the way. Even our smallest guests get to have fun onboard. Independence’s nurseries are great places where little ones (and their parents) can go to play with musical instruments, get up to some messy arts and crafts, and spend lots of time playing. It was because she loved cruises so much as a child that Erin decided to start her career working on ships. We’re so lucky that she’s dedicated her time to making sure other children have as much fun as she did.

Who are Guest Services on Independence of the Seas®

The guest services staff are the crew members who you’ll spend most of your time with. As guest services manager Marko says, they’re the heart and brain of the ship. Heart, because they care for the guests for 24/7, and the brain because they know everything that happens onboard the ship. Marko has worked with Royal Caribbean for a year, and believes that on a ship, guests experience more attention to detail than in any hotel, and that the Guest Services team know the answer to any question. After all, they do live and work on the ship! When travelling on Independence of the Seas, if you ever have a question or want to make your time onboard more special, Marko and his team are the best people to talk to.
