Meet Our Extraordinary Staff: Introducing Una Twomey

By JoTuesday 28th March 2017

We have a large number of dedicated staff across our ships, with jobs ranging from hosts to chefs, performers and instructors, to cleaners and captains. We thought that we'd introduce you to one of the incredible people we have the delight of working with — meet Una Twomey, Shipboard Human Resources Manager of Allure of the Seas!
Una Twomey started her career at the age of just fifteen in a Customer Services role. After realising how much she enjoyed working with and supporting other people, she went on to study Personnel Management. Inspired by her brother's previous experience with Royal Caribbean, Una joined Grandeur of the Seas in 2003. Since then, she has worked across several Royal Caribbean ships, including Quantum, Ovation and Anthem of the Seas. With the ships having a combined maximum capacity of nearly 5,000 members of staff, Una must certainly be very busy! We talked to her about her role and the things she loves about working for Royal Caribbean. Hi, Una! What does a typical day as a Shipboard HR Manager for Royal Caribbean entail? Hi there! Where do I start? My day starts with reviewing and answering my emails. Once I've done that, I usually meet with the Hotel Director or the Executive Committee. We review what needs to be addressed and achieved on both a daily and weekly basis, as well as discuss any upcoming events or projects. It's important to touch base and make sure I'm always in the loop. I have daily catch-ups and project reviews with my team members. I walk with them around the crew areas so I can answer any of their questions, which I really enjoy. My office is open until 7pm, but I am always available to give answers and guidance to the crew where necessary. Anything goes! What has been your proudest moment while working for Royal Caribbean? Could you tell us what it is that you enjoy most about your role? It has to be the day that I was selected to be the New Build HR Manager for Quantum, Anthem and Ovation of the Seas ships. It was certainly a lot of hard-work; from spending time in the shipyard to setting up the ships and bringing them into service. But that's not to say I didn't love every single part of it! The day that Quantum of the Seas joined the Royal Caribbean fleet, I was so overwhelmed with pride and excitement, I was in floods of tears. I've recently joined Allure of the Seas, and I simply can't wait for what's next! The best things about my role are meeting new people, driving results, helping the crew reach their goals in the company and maintaining a positive approach to resolving challenges. There's something new every day! How have you reached this point in your career? What would you say to people who want to follow in your footsteps? I believe I have reached this point in my career by being consistent, personable and having a ‘can do' approach. I also aim to maintain a fair, objective, and transparent attitude to all aspects of my role. I am an independent thinker and I am not afraid to express a point of view, which may sometimes prove unpopular, but it also earns me respect. How does working for Royal Caribbean allow for a good work-life balance? Tell us a little bit about what you get up to outside of work. Being a part of Royal Caribbean works perfectly for me as I'm single, with no children. When I'm on contract I'm totally work-focused and when on holiday, I love to travel. However, I do travel far less than I used to, since I relocated to Spain. I used to live in Ireland, but it was far too cold! I fill up my time outside work with lots of activities. I enjoy classes at my local gym, I'm connected to a local children's charity, I cycle a lot, and I like to spend warm afternoons on the beach with my friends. Every holiday I take is to visit my family in Ireland – especially my dad who is almost 89 years old. Lovely to speak with you, Una! Thanks, you too!
Una is the first of many to feature in our ‘Extraordinary Staff' series.
