Meet the Destinations Insider

By HarryWednesday 21st September 2016

Zsofia Sarkadi. Zsofia Sarkadi.

Earlier this year, we introduced Private Journeys. Private Journeys are our bespoke shore excursions, each one tailor-made by one of our talented Destinations Insiders. Using their knowledge and expertise, these insiders craft unforgettable experiences, from adventures in Alaska to luxurious escapes in St. Maarten. We went behind the scenes to meet Zsofia Sarkadi, one of our insiders – here’s what she had to say.

A bit about Zsofia…

Having worked at Royal Caribbean for eight years (seven years onboard and one year as a Destinations Insider), Zsofia loves a life of adventure. She’s travelled the world, exploring countless destinations, giving her the knowledge to create amazing shore excursions for our guests.

1. Which Royal Caribbean destination is your favourite and why?

Alaska, without a doubt. I was impressed by the grand nature of everything in Alaska. Giant mountains, huge icefields, rainforests, tremendous plants, and large animals. Among my favourites are the lovable whales, with their spectacular performances in the water: jumping, breaching, bubble-net feeding, and playing with the whale watching vessels. What I love about Alaska is not only the breath-taking scenery, the impressive nature and the wildlife, but also the local people, who are among the friendliest I have ever met.

2. What advice would you give to someone visiting Alaska?

I would simply supply them with a bucket list including the following: whale watching, searching for bears, touring the glaciers by plane, hiking in the rainforests, touring the rainforest canopy, and eating freshly-grilled king salmon.

3. Tell us a unique fact about Alaska.

It was in Alaska that I, for the first (and only) time in my life, “heard the silence”. It was an amazing experience during a floatplane tour. We landed on a remote lake inside the Misty Fjords (Ketchikan), in the middle of nowhere, and climbed out onto the wing of the plane. I looked around and marvelled at the dramatic scenery. It was at this point that I realised how calm and quiet it was, so much so that I could “hear the silence”. I will never forget this feeling.

4. Why should guests try a Private Journey?

Private Journeys give guests an opportunity to truly immerse themselves in a destination. Wherever you’re going, a Private Journey will offer new ways for you to explore known and unknown destinations. Each journey is custom-designed, so you can experience each destination in any way you like, and we personalise each stage of the excursion, adding multiple unique touches to make the excursion as special as possible.

5. What’s the most incredible Private Journey you’ve organised so far?

A multiday adventure in Asia, including Angkor Wat, Siem Reap, Saigon highlights, and the Mekong Delta. It was arranged for a party of 8 friends (4 couples) who had decided to go on a once-in-a-lifetime trip. As well as wanting to include the essence of the region, they also wanted to travel in style, including VIP transportation, luxury hotels and Business Class air travel. So, we created a bespoke Private Journey which combined amazing sights and authentic experiences, with the luxury of a private tour.

6. What would be your ideal Private Journey?

Although I’ve been many times before, I’d like to take my husband on an Alaskan cruise for our wedding anniversary. I’d love to show him all my favourite places and arrange a private tour in Juneau. I’d charter a helicopter with a mountaineer guide and we’d go glacier trekking, including ice wall climbing. Once on the top of the ice wall, which is like being on top of the world, we would renew our vows.  I’d also hire a private videographer to capture this special experience.
