Talking Tech with Jason Bradbury

By BijalMonday 25th August 2014

Last month we asked UK tech expert and all-round gadget pro, Jason Bradbury, to talk about the technology behind the entertainment onboard our Quantum Class ships.

Today we announced even more ground-breaking innovations onboard our Quantum Class smartships making them the most connected and technologically advanced ships at sea whilst being environmentally friendly and looking after our crew.

Some of our most exciting innovations include the Bionic Bar, an area that allows guests to place their order via a tablet device and then let our robotic bartenders do the rest! And you can now stay connected throughout your journey with our new satellite broadband solution which will bring our guests the fastest off land WiFi ever! We can settle all your nerves as you no longer need to worry about losing your luggage with our luggage tracker, and there’s even a clever app which helps you keep track of your plans and booking whilst on-board. We sat down with Jason Bradbury again, to find out his thoughts on some of our latest innovations… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1cyyOUZjEIc

 1. What was your perception of cruising prior to seeing our latest class of ship?

Jason Bradbury: It's an awful thing to admit but, If I'm really honest, I'm guilty of assigning cruise ships to the senior citizen bracket! It probably comes from my wife's stories of her and her grand parents exploring the high seas when she was a kid (for some reason I didn't choose to encode the fact that she loved every minute of them!). So, yeah, before my experience with Royal Caribbean opened my eyes, cruising was about bingo, cheesy cabaret and tiny cramped cabins (with a porthole view, if you're lucky).

2. Which of our innovations have got you most excited?

Where do I start? The Ripcord Sky Diving Simulator does it for the adrenaline junky in me. Roller skating, bumper cars and basketball tick the boxes for the younger members of the Bradbury clan. And the North Star (aerial viewing pod) looks amazing. I'm also intrigued to see the various robotics in action - like the robotic cocktail bar and the robotic screens that I'm told are part of a stunning, state of the art, wrap around entertainment venue.

3. Once you're on the ship, which part of it will you be most excited to experience first?

The quick answer is Ripcord!! But I've never even seen a cruise ship, let alone been on-board something as game-changing as the Quantum Class vessels like Anthem of the Seas - so I think I'll just want to wander around and take in the scale of the thing. Anthem has the largest active indoor space at sea - aside from what this means for that ever present parental question: 'What shall we do with the kids when its raining?' I'm fascinated to see how the size and scale of the on-board recreational areas feel.

4. Do you think this smart technology now sets a benchmark for other forms of travel?

It's easy to get caught up in the show-stopping tech onboard a ship like Anthem (Sky Diving, Bumper Cars, North Star, robotic bartenders) but these Quantum Class ships are smart in more subtle ways - expect the most blissfully hassle-free check in you've ever experienced with a streamlined, app-based system from web booking to cabin access. Yes, this could catch on - as could the RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) chips in your luggage that mean you know the exact whereabouts of your gear from the moment you step foot in check-in. As a frequent traveller, I'd love to think that putting the customer at the centre of this kind of technology-driven efficiency might catch on.

5. What challenges do our smart technologies overcome in travel?

Aside from the need to be ahead of the curve in terms of the entertainment and experience parts of a modern cruise, the main challenges smart tech can help to meet are all about lowering the stress associated with booking a holiday and transitioning to and from a ship with piles of luggage and tired kids. My wife and three kids are booked onto Anthem, so I guess I'm about to find out just how smart all this 'smart technology' really is.

6. In your opinion, how technologically advanced is this ship compared to everything else out there?

Quite simply, Royal Caribbean's new Quantum Class ships are at the bleeding-edge technologically. The sheer scale and ambition of their entertainment spaces and experiences they offer is mind-blowing and the feature-set of a ship like Anthem reads like a shopping list of 'first at sea' and 'first anywhere' innovations.

7. In what ways do you see the ships' connectability benefiting passengers?

I haven't been on a cruise before but I'm very aware of the challenge of being connected at sea. Royal Caribbean have invested a lot of time and money in an industry leading satellite broadband solution that will offer unprecedented WiFi broadband speeds, in line with the kind of internet experience most web savvy people expect on dry land.

8. Who should be most excited about the potential of Vistarama and our Roboscreens, the audience or the performer?

Both. It has to be the case that performers get as excited as the audience when the backdrop for their work is something never seen before. A gigantic 12k resolution cinema screen! Yes, I just said '12k'! That's nearly twice as much as an IMAX cinema. These robotic screens bring a physical, as well as visual, dynamic to the specially choreographed sequences at the heart of all the shows onboard Anthem. What's not to get excited about?

9. Bionic Bar, what’s your thoughts?

My expectations are high! If the onboard robotic bartenders can't make me the best Mojito I've ever had - I'm swimming back to shore.

10. You said you've booked your tickets; are you excited yet?

Yes!!! I've booked the Bradbury family onboard Anthem. I'm secretly hoping for a state-room with a seriously nice view (I'll settle for the virtual views which I'm told are stunning!) Our two new smartships will be packed full of amazing technology that will make it easier for you to plan each day and stay in touch with home with the easy to use app on your smartphone or on one of the screens around the ship. We’re also using ground breaking innovation to make your holiday even more fun with Roboscreens and Vistarama to WOW you and smart art around the ship to keep you entertained onboard.
