The Gyroscopic Pool Table

By BijalTuesday 28th May 2013

Despite having been on a number of Royal Caribbean cruises, I’m still amazed by the advances in technology onboard. There are all kinds of gadgets to help enhance the cruise experience, but my current favourite has to be the gyroscopic pool table.

Even for people that don’t play pool, the gyroscopic pool table is something that has to be seen to be believed. At first my eyes couldn't quite work out what was happening. As the boat moves, so does the table. But the balls stay perfectly in place. Much like an optical illusion, my eyes were glued to the gizmo. Check out the video below to watch the gyroscopic pool tables in action.
This table is the first of its kind and uses a gyroscope to keep the table level, no matter what trouble the seas are causing. The new cruise technology isn’t usually linked with entertainment though. It’s often found when a magnetic compass fails, helping stabilize radio controlled helicopters and assist with military operations.
For Royal Caribbean we are proud of this new technology. Not only because it’s a first for the cruise industry, or that it really is a cool gadget. But because on our ships, no one will ever be able to use the excuse ‘the ship moved the balls when I was trying to take a shot’.
FYI - Despite this amazing new table helping cruise enthusiasts get their pool fix, it can currently be found on limited trips. The gyroscopic pool table can only be used at the Colony Club on the Radiance Class ships. If you’re hoping to experience the self-levelling technology it’s always good to check with us before you book.
