By AdeleTuesday 21st May 2013

Getting the most from your cruise holiday is easy when you’re armed with advice from those in the know. We’ve asked our cruise-savvy guests (and Facebook fans) for their first time cruise tips, and gathered some of our favourites in this handy post. So if you’re preparing to embark on your first cruise, read on for great advice for life onboard, and if you’ve sailed with us before we would love to hear your tips too.

We asked: What's the one thing you wish someone had told you before you went on your first cruise?

Packing

Farewell to good old times 2

The laundry costs are really cheap so you don't have to over pack - Yianoula Griffiths

Pack swimwear in hand luggage so you can head straight to the sun deck. Then there’s no need to wait for your suitcase -  Deb Warwick Leadbeater

Buy bigger trousers for the second week - J Beverley Harding Bowers

Bigger trousers and skirts - a great idea! Or else make full use of the fabulous gyms onboard! - Maggie Dunne-Howden

Don’t take too many shoes - Lynn English

When you go to the Baltic, pack for every possible combination of weather as they will all happen at some point! - Mandy Wilton

Make sure you take a small bag as the last night of your cruise you’ll have to leave your packed bags outside your cabin and you’ll need a small bag to put the last of your clothes and toiletries you need for that night/next morning in. Either take a bag or you’ll end up buying one if you only take large suitcases - Symone Pearce

Rooms

A balcony cabin is a must. There’s nothing like going to bed with the balcony door open listening to the waves - Neil Lutton

Book the best cabin you can afford - Marjorie Dench

I would advise paying that bit extra for a balcony stateroom I loved waking up early and watching the ship come into port - Paul Mayes

Breakfast from room service is a great way to wake gently ready for the day ahead. Cruise Holidays UK - Ian Gardner

Planning

Always read the daily planner (Cruise Compass) so you don’t miss anything - Margaret Denson

Book the day trips online beforehand - Sue Sleight

Kids don’t want to spend 24/7 with the parents and when they are with you they like playing golf or going in the pool. My teens loved Brilliance and Independence of the Seas and spent plenty of time with us and at their clubs making new friends - Michelle Blackburn

Don't overdo the port tours the fun is really all about the ship - Emma McCulloch

Cruise Addiction

Cruising is addictive. Once you've been on one, you'll yearn to go back again and again - Lizzi Dawson

You’ll become addicted to cruising. I took my first cruise at 34 years old and wasn't sure it was my thing! How wrong was I? - Jill White

Once you have a cruise your life changes forever. I just want to keep on cruising for ever. So many new friends that you meet up with. There’s so much to do on the ship, good food all day, clean air and many places to see -  Cynthia Girling

My husband had real trouble for years and years getting me to go on a cruise. So wish I had listened to him before, been on 5 in 5 years now, can't get enough of them - Joan Wilson

Should've done it sooner! - John Chivers

Are you ready for your first cruise? Here are some useful bits of info to get you started. Be online savvy and check the downloadable deck plans for our ships. You can check out the activities for kids onboard so keeping the kids occupied should be a breeze. You’ll also find plenty of cruise tips videos on our YouTube channel here. If you’ve cruised before, what advice would you give those taking their first cruise?
