Family Fun on the High Seas

By Sally GunnellMonday 15th July 2013

As a busy mum, I’m always looking for opportunities to spend more time with my family.  We have spent years looking for the perfect family holiday – one that combines quality family time, with complete relaxation for my husband and I, and wall to wall fun for the boys. A few years ago I discovered Royal Caribbean for the first time and, having never cruised before, now struggle to imagine us doing anything else.

Our new-found passion for this amazing family holiday made me want to tell more mums and dads about it.  We spent so many years without cruise on our radar, and really missed out, so when I heard about Royal Caribbean’s “Royal Mums & Dads” campaign, which allows parents to find out more about the onboard family holiday experience direct from other parents who have experienced it with their own kids, I wanted to be involved.  And where better to show mums and dads what they’re missing out on, than onboard a ship itself, with the kids in tow... On Saturday 13th July, I took the family to Southampton to board the Independence of the Seas for a fun-packed day of activities.  Joining us were parent bloggers and their families, all eager to get onboard and find out more. Royal Caribbean Cruises #RoyalMums Ship VisitOnce onboard we had a quick tour of the children’s facilities, including the nursery which takes children from as young as 6 months and has some incredible facilities to keep them entertained for hours. Then came the part that my kids had been most looking forward to – the opportunity to explore the rock climbing wall, the sports area, play some mini golf and even see the FlowRider in action (a surf simulator guaranteed to give you hours of fun and memories that will last a lifetime). Before we knew it the morning had gone by in a flash and it was time to see some of the world-class entertainment onboard the ships.  Our treat was an ice show – yes the ships have their own ice-rinks onboard, how amazing is that?! – and the spectacle enthralled kids and adults alike. All of that excitement had helped us to work up quite an appetite and lunch certainly didn’t disappoint!  The ships have numerous restaurants and cafes to choose from onboard and flexible dining times for guests, which works really well if you have young children that need an early night or slightly older ones who can’t wait to dash off to the teen disco, whilst you relax in the bar (or the spa)... During the course of the day, I spoke to a number of Mums & Dads to share my enthusiasm for the ships and find out what they thought about the experience.  The overwhelming consensus was that there was no better barometer for family holiday success than the smiles and laughter coming from their children.  Friendships were forged, adventures were planned and excitement was king... all before lunchtime.  As a mum, what more could you ask for?
