Erica Douglas : Our Caribbean Cruise Highlights!

By EricaFriday 15th August 2014

Erica, Alex & Erin

Erica Douglas and her family have just come back from a week in the Caribbean onboard Oasis of the Seas - we asked them to share the highlights from their trip.

 Our Caribbean Cruise Highlights

Our first family cruise has changed the way we approach holidays forever. As parents of a single child (Erin, 8), holidays can be a challenge. It's difficult trying to find a holiday that suits everyone. We really enjoy spending time together, but we all value our independence and enjoy some alone time. One of the issues we have is that Erin wants to spend time with other children, and while Alex and I aren't unsociable we don't want to spend our holiday latched on to other families.

What we discovered was that a cruise holiday offers the balance we have been searching for. We spent a lot of time together, and when Erin got fed up of us she took herself off to her clubs. The by-product of this was when she was at the pool she'd often bump into friends she'd made at club, which meant no forced conversations with other parents for us. With that concern dealt with we were left to have the most amazing holiday, here are our some of our highlights.

 Hairspray

Erin and I enjoy going to the theatre together at home so we were keen to take advantage and catch this West End standard show. It was simply one of the best shows we've seen anywhere - land or sea! A lovely afternoon spent together that has become a happy memory.

 3D Cinema

After Hairspray it was time for Erin and her Dad to share their passion for movies. They were impressed to find that there was an onboard 3D Cinema where they saw How To Train Your Dragon and I got to spend a couple of hours in the casino (and I won!).

 Central Park

We loved the whole of the Central Park area, from the live classical music in the evening, to breakfast at Park Cafe, and the fantastic six course tasting menu at 150 Central Park. Oh wait, I forgot to mention Giovanni's where we had the most amazing beef fillet (the beef aboard all Royal Caribbean ships is the best). It's such a lovely area that I'd seriously consider booking Oasis or Allure just to enjoy it again.

Dolphin Encounter

Erin and Alex had never swam with dolphins before so we booked an excursion to Tortola, one of the British Virgin Islands. It was a bit of a trek but the experience and photographs were well worth it.

 Maho Beach

During our port day at St Martin we took a taxi ride to Maho Beach to see the low flying planes. We had lunch at a beach bar and paddled in the clear blue seas, it was one of those perfect days.

 Character Breakfast

I thought Erin had grown out of character breakfasts, clearly not. All the memories of her as a three year old at a character breakfast came rushing back.

 The Boardwalk

We rode the carousel, had balloon zebras made for us, and ate at Johnny Rockets. Family fun in spadesful.

We can’t wait to sail away again!

It was quite simply the best family holiday we've ever had, and it has changed the course of family holidays from now on. We've already joined the Crown & Anchor Society and we are on our way to the Mediterranean next year. If you're wondering about a family cruise, do not hesitate, you have found the holiday you've been searching for!
