A Day In The Life Of... Super Mario

By JoTuesday 29th November 2016

Make your way up to the eleventh deck onboard Navigator of the Seas, and you’ll discover a celebrity disguised as your everyday guests. Looking sharp whilst working away at his computer, in-between liaising with guests and crew members, Mario Salcedo has now spent over 6,000 days onboard with Royal Caribbean. With over 850 cruises under his belt, he is now a well-established veteran of the seas.

Mario Salcedo

After spending 21 years in the corporate world working as an international financial advisor, Mario decided to set up his own business and work for himself. At the age of 47, he decided he could make it on his own, whilst at the same time fulfilling his life-long dream of travelling all over the world! …So how did a 47-year-old man come to the conclusion that he should spend the majority of his days on a cruise ship? How did he make the first move to upping sticks, swapping a life on land for one relaxing at sea? Well-versed in travelling the Caribbean, Mario decided his next logical move was to make his life a ‘permanent working vacation’. He first went off-shore in 1997, convinced that would be the ideal way to maintain his new lifestyle. Back then, cruise ships were beginning to offer Internet services onboard; the perfect set-up for Mario to work on his successful business at sea.  Today, Mario’s work is made even easier with the help of VOOM WiFi, the fastest internet at sea.

When it came to deciding which cruise line he should adopt, Mario spent the following three years on a mission, sampling as many cruises as possible in a variety of regions. Sailing on over 100 different cruises and classes of ships, he finally settled in the year 2000 on the newly-introduced Voyager of the Seas – the largest Royal Caribbean cruise ship that existed at the time. He was instantly besotted, finally able to indulge in a cruising experience that suited all of his needs. Once settled, everything else was history. Royal Caribbean was instantly home; the place that he would soon be spending 52 weeks a year onboard. Mario Salcedo, nicknamed ‘Super Mario’ by our very own Liberty of the Seas captain, Charles Teige, must surely hold the title for the most days spent at sea with us – perhaps even beating most of the crew! Mario runs his financial advisory business from the pool deck onboard Navigator of the Seas, using a small table as a desk below a makeshift sign that reads ‘Super Mario’s Office’ – keep an eye out, but make note: regardless of interruptions and distractions (he promises that he will politely answer your questions), Mario maintains a strict discipline of putting in 5 hours of work every day. Sometimes if he’s not finished, you can catch him under the moonlight, tapping away until his day’s work is done. The woes of washing clothes, cooking, shopping and cleaning are a thing of the past for our treasured traveller. With an abundance of dining options to choose from, Mario enjoys eating buffet-style at the Windjammer Café, where the selections of food vary from fluffy omelettes to a carvery! With our onboard services, the worries of everyday life are well and truly out the window. Mario can instead focus on being productive and enjoying himself, free from the mundanities of household chores and routine.  His favourite activities range from dancing and taking long walks to scuba diving; some of his favourite scuba diving locations include Cozumel and Grand Cayman.

With plans to stay with us indefinitely, we look forward to having Mario on our cruise ships for a long time yet. He’s a truly irreplaceable member of the Royal Caribbean family, so be sure to keep your eyes peeled for more updates on how he’s doing!
