Sun, sea, sand… and margaritas! Sun, sea, sand… and margaritas!

 

Yesterday was Margarita Day and we spent the day celebrating all that’s good – which means everything! – about this tequila-based tipple. It’s fair to say, we love margaritas. And why wouldn’t we? There’s nothing better than a refreshing round from any of our onboard bars, after a long day exploring a new destination.

Who made the first margarita?

 
The origin of the margarita is a hotly-contested topic, with several bartenders claiming it as their own. Was it invented in Mexico by Carlos "Danny" Herrera at his restaurant, Rancho La Gloria, in the late 1930s? Or was it invented in Texas by Francisco "Pancho" Morales in 1942? Or perhaps it was concocted by Dallas socialite, Margarita Sames? Nobody knows which of the many stories are true, but we can confirm one thing – the cocktail is delicious!
 

What’s in a margarita?

 
A traditional margarita consists of tequila, triple sec and lemon or lime juice. It’s often served in a glass with a salted rim, and is enjoyed in one of three ways: on the rocks (over ice), as a frozen drink (blended with crushed ice) or straight up (without any ice).
 
 
Our onboard bars make several different versions, all of them delightful, and now you can make your own! Here are a few of our favourite recipes.
 

Margarita El Picadura

 
Ingredients
 
 
2oz Patrón Silver Tequila
2oz Lime juice
1oz Agave nectar
1oz Watermelon syrup
Aleppo pepper/lime salt
 
 
Method
 
 
  • Salt the rim of the glass.
  • Combine the remaining ingredients in a shaker over ice.
  • Shake well and double strain over fresh ice in the serving glass.
  • Garnish with a slice of fresh lime.
 
 

Avocado Margarita

 
Ingredients
 
 
1.5oz Patrón Silver Tequila
0.5oz Patrón Citrónge Liqueur
0.25oz Fresh avocado
2oz Lime juice
0.5oz Simple syrup
Aleppo pepper/lime salt
 
 
Method
 
 
  • Salt the rim of the glass.
  • Muddle the avocado with the fresh lime juice.
  • Combine all the remaining ingredients in a shaker over ice.
  • Shake well and double strain over fresh ice in the serving glass.
 
 

Jalapeno-Cucumber Margarita

 
Ingredients
 
 
1.5oz Don Julio Blanco Tequila
0.5oz Cointreau Orange Liqueur
1.5cm Piece of a jalapeno pepper
3 Sprigs of coriander
3 Discs of cucumber (approx. 2cm)
1oz Lime juice
0.5oz Simple syrup
 
 
Method
 
 
  • Muddle the jalapeno with the coriander.
  • Combine all the remaining ingredients in a shaker over ice.
  • Shake well and double strain over fresh ice in the serving glass.
