Anthem of the Seas, Music to Your Ears

By DavidFriday 22nd November 2013

The days have been ticking by, and you’ve all been eagerly guessing what our exciting news could be. Finally, the time has come to spill the beans. We’ve all been bubbling over with excitement, impatiently waiting to tell you our exciting news, so here it is!

Anthem of the Seas

We know how important music and entertainment is in all our lives.  Great music sticks with you and can conjure up great holiday memories even after the holiday is over. We recently conducted some research which found 74% of people said music was important to them and 93% regarded their favourite song as inspiring. From acrobatic shows to musical concerts, at Royal Caribbean we’ve always been passionate about creating memorable performances, and now we have something even bigger and better. Our brand new ship Anthem of the Seas will include some of the most technologically advanced music and entertainment spaces in the world! In the heart of Anthem of the Seas is the impressive Music Hall, built to showcase the best in live music for you to enjoy during your holiday. Not only that, but there’s Two70°, another spectacular music venue which gained its name from the magnificent 270-degree panoramic sea view it displays through its floor-to-ceiling glass windows. There’s even a 3 storey bar in the centre of it all – sounds like a music lovers dream to us! Entertainment and music is in the DNA of all our ships, and when conducting our research we enlisted music industry expert, author and DJ, Stuart Maconie to select five anthems from past and present, and asked the nation to choose the song that makes them the happiest. The top three tunes – U2’s Beautiful Day with 36 per cent of the vote; the Beatles’ Hey Jude with 28 per cent of the vote; and Hubert Parry’s Jerusalem with 22 per cent – reflect the diversity of tunes that reach anthem status. We caught up with Stuart to get his thoughts on music and the influence it has… Q: You speak about anthems raising spirits, which songs make you the happiest A lot of the songs I love, I don’t know if they do make me happy. I like Jerusalem or ‘There is a Light that Never goes out’ by The Smiths which are quite melancholic. But the ‘Good Times’ by the Chic is a great happy song, along with ‘We are Family’ by Sister Sledge, which is really uplifting. Q: What part does music play when you’re on holiday? A: A massive part , back in the day when you didn’t have iPods I would be a real pain and take piles of CDs with me which would really weigh us down. I listen to records for my job, but on holiday I listen to it just for fun. I listen to different types of music depending on the type of holiday, from partying in clubs to when I go walking in the Lake District, so it’s a big part. Q: Is there a particular song that recalls a memory from a holiday? A: I can remember being a teenager and going on a holiday with friends to Rome, which was so much fun. Scritti Politti had a big hit with a track called ‘Wood Beez’, and that was played all the time! Q: What songs do you always listen to on holiday? A: I don’t think there are any songs I always listen to, but because my job is in music I will quite often go to people and say “oh have you heard this”. I associate different records with different holidays so I don’t have a holiday tune but I usually will take whatever is new that summer or year. Q: Do you think anthems have changed over the years? A: They definitely have, anthems were national anthems or religious pieces of music but now people see them as songs with a big chorus or emotional heart like Robbie Williams’ Angels or Hey Jude. Q: Do you have an anthem of all time? A: I love Jerusalem, which was one of the 5 that got voted for, but being  an old indie kid from the north ‘There is a Light that Never Goes Out’ from The Smiths is an indie anthem for me. With all the fantastic experiences Anthem of the Seas has to offer we are delighted to announce from April 2015 she will be calling Southampton her home, sailing to and from there during the summer and autumn months. When the winter chill sets in she will make her way to towards sunny Fort Lauderdale, in Florida, to sail around the Caribbean. The best of both worlds! We can’t wait! We’re so excited about Anthem of the Seas and what it means for the future of Royal’s entertainment, and we can’t wait to have you onboard. Take a look for more for more information on Anthem of the Seas.
