An Interview with Captain of Independence of the Seas®

By JoTuesday 17th October 2017

Independence of the Seas® is one of the most popular ships to sail out of the UK, and is the ideal ship for families wanting to explore the rest of the world. We spoke to Captain Iv Vidos, the captain of Independence of the Seas® to see why it is so popular, and what it’s like being the head of this iconic ship.

Who is Captain Iv Vidos?

Being captain of one of the most famous cruise ships in the world doesn’t happen by accident. It takes a lot of hard work and dedication, as well as growing some pretty steady sea legs. Captain Vidos started his life at sea younger than most. He was just four years old when he started sailing boats with his grandfather in the sea off his homeland of Croatia.
It won’t surprise you that he comes from a seafaring family, and that his career has always involved sailing. He began in the merchant marines when he was 19, and left when he was 29. Later, he joined Royal Caribbean and was captain of Splendour of the Seas® for seven years, before becoming captain of Independence, where he has spent the past two years - and hopefully many more!

What Makes Independence of the Seas® so Special?

As captain of a large ship, you get to know every nook and cranny. So, it’s not surprising that when we asked Captain Vidos what his favourite thing about Independence was, he answered with: the ship itself.
To him, it’s the sturdiness and reliability of the ship that he loves the most. He can trust Independence, which considering she sails to the most extraordinary destinations in the world, is pretty great.
But it’s not just the reliability of Independence that keeps guests coming back, although it’s certainly important. It’s actually the innovative, and fun features that the guests want to enjoy again and again. Features like FlowRider, mini-golf and the rock climbing wall keep make Independence one of the most fun and entertaining ships on the ocean.
Independence sails all over the world, but of course as a captain he’s going to have his favourite destinations. A true Croatian at heart, he loves to sail to his home country, but also considers Venice and the Greek Islands as two of his personal favourite spots too.
What makes a ship so special? The staff! They are always behind the scenes, working their magic to make your time with Royal Caribbean as amazing as possible. Captain Vidos agrees with this, and said that it’s not the captain who makes the ship, but the staff. He is very proud of his staff, and loves to talk about how hard they work to make Independence the success she is.
To thank the crew for their continual hard work onboard, they receive lots of treats like crew parties, and their own shore excursions because, after all, it would be a shame to travel the world and not see any of it.

What is Life like Onboard Independence?

For the guests onboard Independence, it’s all about fun. But in order to make her as fun as she is, it takes a lot of hard work from the crew. Captain Vidos likened being the captain to being the CEO of a small company. He takes weekly meetings with his staff, and puts a lot of trust in the directors and managers to ensure that the guests are having the best possible time.
One of his favourite things to do is to meet the guests, take photos with them, and give his speech at the commencement of the cruise. Another one of his highlights of sailing on Independence is the time he spends with the Independence Godmother, Elizabeth Hill. Elizabeth was nominated to be Godmother by her daughter for her outstanding charity work.

The New Look of Independence

Independence of the Seas® is about to enter one of her most exciting phases - a multi-million pound makeover. The accommodation and activities onboard are being reimagined to make Independence even more incredible.
The changes start in the accommodation, where panoramic staterooms are being built in addition to the existing rooms, so you can be sure you have the most amazing view at all times. But that’s not all! There will be even more exciting entertainment features onboard too. You can reach for the skies at the Trampoline Zone, and put your agility and mind to the test when you try out the laser tag and escape rooms.
As for dining, as well as our delicious steak restaurant Chops Grille, you can now get a taste of the exotic at Izumi, with artistically crafted sushi.
Has this insight into Independence of the Seas® made you want to explore the world on her? Take a look at the destinations and see where you can go!
