A day onboard Independence of the Seas

By AdeleFriday 10th November 2017

Our cruises take you to the world’s most dazzling destinations. Beautiful beaches, cultural cities and fabulous forests; we go to them all. On our journeys, it sometimes takes a little longer to get from one destination to another, giving you a day at sea.

What is a day at sea?

It’s exactly as it sounds! This is a day you have completely to yourself, free to explore the ship and everything she has to offer, at your own pace.

What can I do onboard Independence of the Seas?

Independence of the Seas® is the UK’s most popular ship, not just because of the destinations she sails to, but also because of the activities onboard. Things are about to get even more extraordinary onboard Independence, in 2018, she will be transformed with even more exciting features.

Take a look below to see how you can spend your day onboard the new Independence.

Your day at sea onboard Independence

Morning:

9am:

Rise and shine! The new Independence will come with panoramic rooms, so you will have the enviable views of the sparkling ocean outside.

There isn’t a destination to visit today, so you can get up whenever you want. If you’re the sort of person who likes to seize the day bright and early, head to Windjammer and enjoy breakfast. Windjammer is a buffet style restaurant with so much on offer, you’ll be grateful you got up early, giving you more time to choose!

If you’re someone who likes to take it easy in the morning and relax into their day, then order some room service, and have it in bed, or on your balcony overlooking the blue ocean, living your best life.

11am:

After breakfast, head up to the deck to spend a few hours of fun getting involved with all the activities there.

We spoke to Caroline Peters, the activities manager who is in charge of all the fun on Independence. First of all, she recommended something with a view, and a little bit of adventure. Climb to the very top of the rock climbing wall, and see the beautiful blue ocean stretching out for miles.

She told us that there are always three trained crew members manning the rock climbing wall, so you’re in safe hands and you can even get some climbing tips from the experts.

If heights aren’t quite your thing, then don’t worry, Caroline had plenty of other ways to have fun on Independence. See if you can shoot a hoop or two on our basketball court – you never know, you might find your inner LeBron James.

Afternoon:

12pm:

Now it’s time for one of Caroline’s favourite things to do on Indie; the famous FlowRider®!

Not only is it a great way to get your adrenaline pumping, and test your balance and stamina, but it will also give you a healthy appetite for your lunch.

Caroline gave us a few tips on how to be the best on the FlowRider®; she says to think of it more like skateboarding rather than surfing, don’t be too nervous, and enjoy yourself! Caroline also told us that FlowRider® goes at 35mph, and the two pumps shoot the 36 gallons of water a minute using horsepower of 80.

If you don’t fancy taking on the waves, then take a seat at the Wipe Out bar near FlowRider®, and cheer on the surfers on the big screen, all with a glass of your favourite drink in your hand.

You could also explore the rest of the ship. Why not see if you can treat yourself to a new outfit or piece of jewellery on the Royal Promenade? You can also head downstairs to the gallery and pick up a new work of art.

We asked Caroline what she thought made Independence so special, and she said simply, it’s because there’s something for everyone here. If you want an action-packed holiday, then you definitely won’t get bored. Similarly, if you want to be a bit more chilled, then there are still fun things for you to do. From guest lecturers on history, crafts and other interesting subjects, to parties arranged by the staff.

1pm:

After such a busy morning, you’ll be in need of something really delicious for lunch. How do you feel about going back in time to the 1950s at Johnny Rockets? Here, proper American hamburgers and milkshakes are the order of the day.

Of course, it’s not all burgers and fries onboard Independence. If you fancy something a little more health-conscious (but if you want to treat yourself on your holiday, go for it!) head into the ship to Squeeze Juice Bar, and gulp down one of the tasty smoothies. Of course, try not to be too tempted by the Ben & Jerry’s® café, or Cupcake Cupboard while you’re there…

2pm:

You’ve been really active all day, so it’s only right you take some time for yourself and relax. You can sunbathe on the deck, having a dip in the pool when you need to cool down, or head into the solarium for some real R ‘n’ R.

We know that the kids might not be the best at relaxing, and could wind up feeling a little restless after a while on the sun lounger. If that’s the case, there are plenty of other options to keep them entertained.

They could spend time at the Adventure Ocean Kid’s Club, getting involved in science experiments, arts and crafts, theatre workshops and much more! From babies to teenagers, we have clubs dedicated to all age ranges; there’s fun for everyone!

If the thought of being away from the pool is too much to bear for your little ones, they won’t be disappointed. The new Independence will feature a completely renovated Splashaway Bay, and best of all… two waterslides! If that’s not a brilliant way to spend an afternoon at sea, we don’t know what is.

4pm:

Now you’ve been relaxing for a few hours, you will probably want to stretch your legs. But with this being Independence, it’s not just a long walk we offer you. How about you get those muscles moving with a few rounds of mini golf?

5pm:

As the evening activities draw closer, why not make yourself feel just that little bit more special? Our Vitality Spa has a huge range of treatments designed to relax and rejuvenate you.

Our professional beauticians will fill your day up with a whole variety of treatments, from massages to manicures, to hair styling. You will look (and feel) a million dollars.

Evening

7pm:

The restaurants onboard Indie are going to look quite different soon too. As you’ve spent your day sailing the sea, why not have sushi for dinner?

Independence’s new restaurant, Izumi, brings you the most delicious sushi at sea. Created by Chef Travis Kamiyama, you can dine on a true Japanese feast of sushi, noodles and carpaccio.

We know that there is a whole range of dietary requirements, and we do everything we can to make sure everyone is catered for. Just ask your waiter once you sit down, and they will work with the chef to make sure you have the best dining experience with us.

8pm:

Now, it’s time for that renowned Royal Caribbean entertainment; a show! Onboard Independence we are lucky enough to have the classic Grease, performed by an outstanding cast in our large theatre.

Late Night:

10pm:

After the show, why not stay up for a night cap? Independence has lots of bars that stay open late so you can finish your day off in style.

Boleros is a Latin bar that makes a mean Mojito, as well as offering some up tempo beats you can dance the night away to. Try the Champagne Bar for a real touch of elegance; what a way to top off a magical day!

Independence’s Makeover 2018

We are so excited about the Independence makeover that is happening soon, which will give you even more to enjoy onboard.

We have given you a few insights into how you can spend your days at sea in 2018, but there’s even more for you to enjoy…

You’ll soon be able to test your agility in the laser tag room, and your brainpower in the escape room. With all the great new features, you’ll be jumping for joy at the new top deck Trampoline Bungee Dome.

Now you can see why Independence is not only the UK’s favourite ship, but also the perfect place to spend a day at sea. The only question is, which destination will you sail to?
