Our Extraordinary Explorer

By JoTuesday 07th March 2017

Recently, we’ve been caught up in a whirlwind of extraordinary adventures. Just in case you missed it, we ran a competition asking the public to post their extraordinary travel photos via Instagram, including the hashtag #ExtraordinaryExplorer. Entrants also had to tag our Instagram page @RoyalCaribbeanUK to get the chance to win three weeks onboard with us on our first ever ‘Intern-Ship’. We were looking for somebody who had a sense of adventure and could capture jaw-dropping photos, and we were blown away by the response!
Hundreds of thousands of people have been inspired by our ‘Intern-Ship of the Seas’ competition, submitting incredible travel photos on Instagram to try and succeed in becoming our NEW ‘Extraordinary Explorer’. We were inundated with a huge range of exciting holiday moments and memories, and our judging panel worked around the clock to whittle the entries down to a final ten. After hours and hours of consideration, the judges made their final decision and settled on ten runners-up, as well the chosen winner of the first ever Royal Caribbean Intern-ship!

What was the prize?

So, what did the lucky winner actually win? The chosen candidate will be travelling across three oceans, on three ships, over a three-week period in the summer of 2017 – with £3000 worth of prize money! It’s up to them to document stories, destinations and experiences in order to inspire holiday makers, whilst enjoying free access to all of our onboard amenities and an all-expenses paid trip! The explorer is a talented storyteller, with a unique way of capturing those essential holiday moments, as well as an eye for the extraordinary.

Our Judges

We asked three talented judges to put their heads together and make the final decision on our Extraordinary Explorer. These are some of the important attributes that the judges were looking for in the winning candidate:
  1. A natural ability to take a good photo.
  2. An ability to represent extraordinary experiences and moments through photography.
  3. An ability to inspire viewers with their content.
  4. An ability to demonstrate good story-telling through photography.
  5. Originality

Time to meet the judges…

As Associate Vice President and Managing Director, Ben provides leadership to the Royal Caribbean UK and Ireland business. One of the industry’s most dynamic leaders, Ben’s insight, innovation and leadership has been integral to the growth of the UK market. We loved looking through everybody’s wonderful holiday moments! Here are some of strongest contenders: “Let’s just pretend that we are actually in this snowy Central Park and not in a grey rainy London!” “Hazy sunsets on the coast of Ghana...” “Hiking to the top of Pulpit Rock is one of the most exhilarating and extraordinary experiences of all time! The views of valleys and fjords when you get to the top of the rock in completely breath-taking” “Varanasi is the place that people come to die, and you can't forget that, from the smell of the burning ghat, to the eyes of the people you pass in the street. But there is also something else: people making a living amongst the dying. Money and this concept are hushed and not spoken about in the West. Our funerals and graveyards far away from the "vulgarity" of monetary transactions. From the chaos here in Varanasi, where life and death live openly side by side, there seems to be a wonderful sense of balance that colourfully teeters on a knife's edge. With the death of one thing comes life and then death and then life and so and so on.” “The golden hour, this unknown cyclist enjoying the winter sun. “ “My time in Rio and a taxi ride further into the city with this hero who loved Jazz and told us about his dancing he goes to in the evenings, some man! Great travels!” “Pilgrimage and prayer #ExtraordinaryExplorer Seoul, January 2017” “Milford Sound has to be one of the most incredible places I've ever visited. No photo could ever do it justice. Mitre Peak, in the middle of the shot rises 5,540ft from where I'm standing.” Thank you to those wonderful explorers who sent in their photos! We were astounded by the beautiful extraordinary moments you were able to capture. And, just who was chosen as our NEW Extraordinary Explorer?

Ciara Flynn!

Ciara sent in this amazing shot of two monks deep in conversation at Kopan Monastery. We were blown away by her innovative skills and eye for the extraordinary!
