Meet the Captain of Quantum of the Seas

By JoWednesday 28th January 2015

Ever wondered what it’s like to be a captain of a ship? From sailing the high seas, to enjoying the company of guests from around the world, the life of a Royal Caribbean captain is an exciting one. To give you some insight into how our brand new Quantum class ships are run, we caught up with Quantum of the Seas’ Master Captain, Szrecko ‘Felix’ Ban. From how he got into this career, to what his average day includes, here you’ll find out all about our fantastic captain.

szrecko and second officer

Meet Felix

Szrecko ‘Felix’ Ban is our Quantum of the Seas cruise Master, a 47-year old ship captain from the city of Dubrovnik, Croatia, who is married with one son. Felix began his maritime journey at the age of 16, when he first set sail off the coast of Dubrovnik. By 1990 he had graduated from the Maritime Academy, and by 1996 he had begun his career as an officer, later being awarded his Mastering licence.

In 1998, Felix joined the Royal Caribbean team as a second officer on Vision of the Seas, and has since worked up to the impressive level of captain.  Nowadays, Felix can be found managing the commanding team in the ship’s bridge, chatting with guests and making sure we all get from A to B as quickly and safely as possible.

Life as a captain

After learning all about his journey to becoming captain, we asked Felix about his day-to-day life in his role. One of the first questions we quizzed him on, was how long he spends working onboard with his crew. He explained that captains tend to work 10-weeks on and then 10-weeks off, allowing them time to see their families and explore the world. But, when he does work, Felix’s days are filled up with plenty of meetings, guest lunches and general management of the ship, leaving him with just enough time at the end of the day to do what he loves most, working out in the staff gym.

Felix’s 5 Quantum favourites

After landing his dream job as the Master Captain of Royal’s most technology advanced ship to date, Felix couldn’t wait get onboard, to explore all of Quantum of the Seas’ amazing features. When we caught up with him, he told us all his favourite qualities of the new ship.
  1. The ship has two azipods (the type of propulsion units we use) that are controlled from the bridge; these provide Quantum of the Seas with improved manoeuvrability, allowing Felix and his team to enjoy the freedom of the sea.
  2. There are four bow thrusters in the ship, which help the ship to reach the impressive speed of 22 knots - and sometimes even over 24 knots!
  3. He loves the Two70° and Vistarama venues, for the way they have both improved the way people can be entertained whilst onboard.
  4. Felix says that Quantum’s bridge is far more user-friendly than previous ships he’s been on, and has the best technology in the industry, making his job that little bit easier.
  5. Felix is also a fan of the section of the boat that allows him to see the sea water through glass – and who wouldn’t!
But, there’s always going to be one thing people wish we could hold on to, and the feature that Felix does miss, is the large, traditional steering wheel.
