#Extraordinary Moments Of 2016

By JoFriday 30th December 2016

2016 has been a truly extraordinary year for us here at Royal Caribbean, so we thought we’d round up all of this year’s highlights for you. From free runners to YouTubers, to setting Guinness world records, we’ve had to pull together our favourite bits from this year, as there were simply too many to choose from!

Harmony of the Seas

June 2016 saw the launch of Harmony of the SeasTM; the largest cruise ship in the United Kingdom. Currently holding the Guinness World Record, the ship boasts three fantastic waterslides that twist and turn 10 decks high! The ship has already begun exploring, taking our guests to some of the most beautiful destinations in Europe and now is in the  Caribbean.

Thrill Professor Brendan Walker Tries the NEW Ultimate Abyss

Brendan Walker, Professor of the U.K’s first ‘Thrill Laboratory’, gave our NEW, 10 deck high slide Ultimate Abyss his stamp of approval in 2016. The tallest slide at sea, Brendan climbed the stairs up to the clear platform and descended 90-feet drop at 9mph, claiming it had a ‘hugely thrilling effect’. With an endless ocean view and a terrifying piranha-like entrance, we’d advise you all to give it a try!

Free Reign on Harmony of the Seas

We wanted to show off Harmony of the Seas in all of her glory - what better way to do that than to ask world Champion free runner Pip Anderson if he’d like to be let loose onboard a 1,188 foot ship?! Pip flipped, jumped and ran his way around the ship with no qualms. Check him out below!

Floating Footballer

Football freestyler world champion and YouTuber Séan Garnier came onboard to join us and to show off his tricks and caused a stir with our guests! Perfect for you footy fanatics, check out what he got up to onboard in the video below:

Steven Wiltshire Creates the Ultimate View

Renowned artist Steven Wiltshire visited Harmony of the Seas and used his unique skill of painting from memory to merge views from Palma de Mallorca, Marseille and Barcelona. In between painting, he enjoyed strolling around the ship as well as getting involved in some dancing!

Wonderland pops up!

This year we wandered down the rabbit hole and brought a ‘dry run’ of our Wonderland pop-up onto dry land. A new, post-modern style of cooking categorized by themes; Earth, Sun, Ice, Fire and Dreams. The restaurant featured food with different textures, temperatures and portion sizes, presented in a non-traditional, creative fashion. A popular choice of our nine specialty dining options onboard Quantum of the Seas and Anthem of the Seas, the pop-up was a big hit when it arrived in Central London for a short period.

Rahyul Patel visits the Mediterranean

We invited travel and fashion blogger Rahyul Patel onboard Independence of the Seas for two weeks. Visiting Gibraltar, Cartagena, Barcelona, and more, Rahyul made the most out of the activities and amenities available. He loved the fact he could enjoy astounding views of the ocean from the 9th deck! Rahyul described the ship as a ‘town’, with ample facilities and plenty of entertainment at his beck and call. He enjoyed meeting the cast of the Grease musical, as well as visiting each of the exciting destinations.

Orbiter of the Galaxies Launches

The 1st April saw the launch of our first ever space cruise, Orbiter of the Galaxies. Working in partnership with Leicester based National Space Centre, we trained 500 staff members to prepare them to embark on a journey of a lifetime. With cosmic plans to take its first guests to space in 2030, there is no holiday more extraordinary. Construction is still under way…

Doug Armstrong Showed Us Around His New Pad!

Blogger extraordinaire Doug Armstrong gave us a tour of Harmony of the Seas, testing out the new extraordinary amenities. Set in an the style of an MTV Cribs, Doug was set free onboard and showed us around the ships fancy new amenities, including our onboard casino and crazy golf course! He even got to meet onboard chef Travis, who showed us how to make a swish octopus dish. Watch the video below!

Ovation of the Seas Joins the Fleet

With the arrival of the exciting Ovation of the Seas, we produced an interactive mosaic on no other platform than Instagram. Working with bloggers and Instagrammers, we created a bird’s-eye view of Ovation of the Seas as she travelled around Europe. A tile was posted each day in order to build the mosaic, which could be clicked on to in order to access insider travel tips, inspiration and recipes for each destination.

Yin & Yang explored the Haiti and Jamaica onboard Freedom of the Seas

Bloggers Yin & Yang embarked on their first ever full length cruise, courtesy of Royal Caribbean. Their itinerary included Haiti, Jamaica, Grand Cayman and Mexico in just a week! Enjoying sun, sea and sand, the two friends immensely enjoyed their trip, making the most out of the excursions and activities available. Read about their exciting ventures to extraordinary destinations with us!
