Where to go on holiday with your family?

By HarryWednesday 13th December 2017

As winter draws closer, and the dark mornings and evenings start to close in, of course your mind starts to wander off to far away exotic places. If you need to narrow down your search for the best family holiday destinations, then look no further.

Labadee, Haiti

Our first stop, is the beach paradise of Labadee on the Caribbean island of Haiti. If it’s adventure you’re looking for, then Labadee has it by the bucket-load. Of course, you can just chill on the beach and make your way through your holiday read, but why do that when there are so many incredible activities to do on the beach? First, dive for treasures with a snorkelling instructor in the warm sea, or go on a jet boat. You can also parasail and kayak - the perfect way to enjoy the sparkling ocean. That’s not all, though. Completely unique to Labadee, are the Dragon’s Breath and Dragon’s Tail. What are these, you ask? Only a hair-raising zipline and a roller-coaster that overlook the sea. There is no better way to experience Labadee in all its glory than from high in the sky, or as you snake your way through the emerald green forest on the roller-coaster. Which one will you do first?

Lisbon, Portugal

You could be forgiven for thinking that Portugal is all about golf and wine. But, there is so much more to this sunny destination. Its stylish capital, Lisbon, is a stunning city, perfect for your family to explore. It’s only a short train ride to the beach, but Lisbon itself is so enchanting that you might find the lure of the yellow tram over the train more enticing. About those yellow trams, they are as Portuguese as pasteis de nata. The first electric trams came to Lisbon in 1901, previously it had been a horse-and-cart system. There are five lines connecting the city, and getting the tram is certainly more fun than walking up those hills. If any of your friends or family are a budding zoologist, then a trip to Lisbon Zoo is a must. Tigers, penguins, monkeys and koala bears are cared for by the conservationists, and you can visit them all.

Puerto Costa Maya, Mexico

If you want to visit the Caribbean and your animal-loving family want something a bit different when it comes to spotting their favourite feathered, furry or scaly creatures, then look no further than Puerto Costa Maya in Mexico. The jungle of Puerto Costa Maya is one of the most magical places you can visit. Its tall trees and exotic plants have been made home by some of Mexico’s most beautiful animals. Combine your love of animals with a day at the beach, and you can help guide baby sea turtles safely to the sea. You can also dive into the turquoise waters yourself, and swim with dolphins and manta rays.

Malaga, Spain

We know that Malaga is a city in Spain famous for its nightlife, but it is also a wonderful family destination. Whether you spend a day frolicking on the beaches, or strolling through town, there is something for everyone. If you fancy yourselves a group of intrepid explorers, then the Nerja Caves will make a great day trip. Thousands of years old and metres beneath ground level, these caves are as beautiful as they are mysterious. They were discovered in 1959, by some local boys who had gone bat hunting - they certainly didn’t expect to stumble upon this underground labyrinth. There are guided tours that will show you all the best bits of the caves, as well as teach you the fascinating history and geography.
