Spend a Day in Santorini

By HarryWednesday 24th September 2014

Santorini

Santorini is one of the most beautiful islands in the world, with a breathtaking landscape, iconic architecture and an idyllic way of life – a little slice of paradise. The history and culture of the island is second to none, dating back to the ancient Minoans in places, whilst offering exemplary contemporary art and haute cuisine in others. And that’s without even mentioning the sun-kissed beaches skirting the island.

No matter what you’re looking for from your perfect holiday, you’re sure to find something up your street. So take a look at our guide to some of the top things to do during your stay, and get ready to fall in love with Santorini and the Greek Islands.

Boats in Santorini

Step back in time

With a heritage as rich and interesting as that of Greece, it would be a shame to miss out on the opportunity to learn more and explore the ruins of once great civilisations. Head up to the site of Ancient Thira, and stroll amongst the remains of grand temples dedicated to the gods and goddesses, and get lost in the mythology of the place. And if you’re not distracted by the dazzling view, you’ll notice that you can still make out the colours and patterns of ancient mosaics. For a little more information about Ancient Thira you can head to the Archaeological Museum in Fira, which houses some truly impressive finds from the site including statues and delicate figurines. Dine out in style

One of the best ways to really immerse yourself in the culture of a place is to sample as much of the local cuisine as possible. Mediterranean food is all about the fresh flavours of ingredients gathered that day, combining to make delicious, healthy dishes. And if you’re a lover of all things from the sea, you’re in luck in Santorini. Being an island, restaurants have direct access to a constant supply of the freshest fish you can get your hands on, as well as a variety of shellfish. If you head to one of the restaurants along the beaches, you’ll be spoiled for choice with that day’s fresh offerings, such as sea urchins, mussels, langoustines or sea bass. Greek cuisine also offers a variety of delicious meat and vegetarian friendly dishes, too, including moussaka, stuffed vine leaves, kebabs and fresh salads. Red Beach Santorini

Hit the shops

Santorini attracts a stylish crowd from around the world, so as you’d expect, there is some decent shopping on the island. If you’re looking for a souvenir to remember your time here, a piece of jewellery is often a good investment. Every time you fasten the clasp of your bracelet or check the time on your watch, you’ll be reminded of watching the sun set from atop picturesque Oia, or strolling through a colourful market street. donkey in Santorini There are also a number of fabulous galleries selling contemporary art, painted by local artists who really capture the atmosphere and energy of Santorini in their work. For gifts to take home to your loved ones, there are plenty of shops in Fira selling local specialities such as wine and olive oil. You can also find sculptures and curios crafted from locally sourced wood and volcanic rock, which make a unique gift. No matter how you spend your time in Santorini, you’ll be sure to never forget this beautiful island. For more holiday inspiration take a look at our previous blog post on Greek Island holidays.
