Shop 'til you drop in Dubai

By JoMonday 30th July 2018

Whether you’re on the hunt for high-end fashion or you’re after some gorgeous gold, you’ll find what you’re looking for in Dubai. The city’s brimming with places to put your hard-earned cash: from souks and malls to boutiques and shopping centres, and everywhere in between. Get a head start with our round-up of the best.

Deira Gold Souk

Embrace your inner magpie and seek out gold, gold and more gold, at the Deira Gold Souk. This traditional market is a treasure trove for gold-lovers, with more than 300 retailers selling intricate jewellery at great prices. Best of all, it’s the ideal spot to put your haggling skills to the test.

Carrefour Supermarket

It might seem odd to visit a Carrefour supermarket in Dubai, but if food’s your fancy it’s one of the best places to go. Browse the aisles and you’ll find all kinds of Dubaian delicacies that are sure to tempt your tastes buds. Add za’atar and sumac to your spice rack, date jam to your pantry and pick up rose syrup for your next homemade cake.

Bur Dubai Souk

Tempted by textiles? Bar Dubai Souk should be at the top of your list. This vibrant market is a feast for the eyes, with colourful fabrics draped over every available surface. Think velvet, silk, satin, cashmere and wool. Once you’ve picked your fabrics, take them to one of the nearby tailors and they’ll whip up whatever garment you’ve got in mind.

Burjuman Centre

If you’re a label-lover or luxury window-shopper, the Burjuman Centre will make you feel right at home. It’s full of high-end boutiques and luxurious designers – from Louis Vuitton and Dolce and Gabbana to Saks Fifth Avenue. All that shopping can be exhausting, so take a break in the sun-dappled Pavilion Garden or stop for a bite to eat at one of the many restaurants.

Perfume Souk

Reawaken your senses with exotic aromas at Dubai’s Perfume Souk. The collection of stalls have thousands of perfumes and types of incense on offer, with many featuring oud and bakhoor – a woody scent that’s typical in Arabic fragrances. If you want to try something a little different, there are scented powders and mists, or you can ask for a personalised aroma based on your tastes.

The Global Village

If you like your shopping with an international flavour, The Global Village is for you. This high-energy expo is a mishmash of international food-sellers and traders. You can sample cuisine from Africa and the Americas and buy items from Asia, Europe and, of course, the Middle East. If that isn’t enough to keep you busy, stop by during the five-month entertainment festival for a concert, show or rollercoaster ride.

Al Ain Centre

All things tech come together at the Al Ain Centre, also known as the ‘Computer Plaza’. This niche shopping centre has everything a computer tech geek could every need, with everything from computer software to storage devices. As there’s so much available, it’s best to do your research before you go – that way, you’ll save a little time on searching.
