Plan a Half-Term Break to Bilbao

The warm Spanish weather, long sandy beaches and plates of delicious tapas make Bilbao a great destination for a May half-term break with the family. Here we’ve put together a handy guide, to make sure you get the most out of your trip.

Things to do

No trip to Bilbao would be the same without stopping by the famous Guggenheim Museum. Filled to the brim with fantastic, contemporary art and interesting and varied exhibits, you’re bound to fall under its’ spell.

Another great activity for your half-term trip is a ride on Bilbao’s Artxanda Funicular. Travel from the city centre to the summit of Artxanda Mountain, all the while enjoying magnificent, panoramic views of the city below. A definite WOW moment!

Sights to see

A must-see in Bilbao is the gothic styled 14th Century Cathedral of St. James, or Catedral de Santiago.  Named after the city’s official saint, the cathedral is surrounded by intricate carvings of religious characters, and filled with a lavish and enchanting interior – a must-see!

During your time at the Guggenheim Museum you’ll also be able to spot the wonderful, and often weird, pieces of art that surround the metallic building. A great sight to see is the flower puppy, a giant model of a puppy but covered in thousands of colourful flowers! Another must-see is Louise Bourgeois’ Maman, a bronze, marble and steel arachnid creation that towers above the streets below – creepy!

Need a beach break?

A great place to take your kids for the morning is Plentzia beach, which you can get to easily via the city’s metro line. It’s a fairly large beach, with small waves, and so makes for a great place to sunbathe on the side, play games with your kids, and even take a dip into the sea for swim.

Great places to eat

There are plenty of great places in Bilbao to grab a snack or enjoy an authentic Spanish lunch. For some great tasting Spanish cuisine head to Xukela, a wonderfully quaint restaurant located in the city’s old quarter. Sit back and unwind in Xukela’s cosy atmosphere, eat mouth-watering plates of food, and drink glasses of robust Rioja.
If your kids fancy some ice cream, after a busy day playing on the beach, take them to Nossi-Be - a charming ice cream parlour that offers a range of creamy iced treats in a variety of flavours. They even offer dairy-free, sugar-free and gluten-free ice cream, so nobody in the family misses out!

Not sure what to do during your half term break?

We have many half-term cruises available for May 2014, so that you can book a last minute family holiday. You’ll have the choice of sailing to sunny Bilbao, Paris and Gijion, or how about a cruise to the mesmerising Norwegian Fjords?

What is your dream holiday destination?
