How to Have the Perfect Trip to Puerto Rico

By HarryMonday 05th June 2017

There's more to the Caribbean than beautiful beaches and sunshine. Our cruises to Puerto Rico will show you the history, colour and sizzling hot nightlife of this island haven.

History of Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico, meaning Rich Port, was discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1493. It was known as a ‘Rich Port' because of the gold found in the river, after this discovery it became a Spanish colony. Its history is embedded in swashbuckling sagas, sugar cane plantations and colonialism. This tangled historic web has made its lasting impression on the island you'll wander through.

See the World in a New Colour

The island is famous for its colours, from the colonial houses in San Juan, the capital, to the lush emerald greenery of the forests. But, the most magical colours aren't on the island at all.
Instead, they are actually in Bahía Mosquito, a protected bay. The lagoon is filled with dinoflagellates, organisms that, when they come into contact with movement (like wriggly fish), they create a bright, beautiful burst of blue light. Take a trip to this natural phenomenon, and you'll create memories that'll last a lifetime.

Toast to Puerto Rico History

When you visit an island paradise, the only thing that can make it any better is when you enjoy it with a cocktail in hand. As Puerto Rico is the home of Bacardi Rum, you can do one better than just enjoying a cocktail.
The Bacardi Rum factory is open to tours, where you can not only discover the history of Bacardi Rum, but also learn genius mixology skills and taste the delicious rum for yourself.
Opening Times:
Monday-Saturday: 9.00am - 4.30pm
Sunday: 10.00am - 4.30pm
Historical Tour: $15 (65+: $12)
Rum Tasting Tour: $49.99
Mixology Tour: $59.99

Discover Colonial Architecture

The rich history of Puerto Rico has meant that the look and style of the island has a unique feel. Before you lounge on the beaches, amble through San Juan, the capital, and take in the balconies, columns and brightly coloured houses that make up the winding streets. This is an opportunity to take some beautiful photos, so have your camera charged and ready.
