Greek Island Cruises - Escape to the Warmth

By HarryFriday 03rd May 2013

greek island cruisesSpring is finally making an appearance in the UK after what feels like a very long winter! This means we can all start dreaming of the summer holidays and lounging in the sun.  Taking a hot Greek island cruise with beaming sunshine sounds very tempting, so we’ve compiled a guide to the Greek Islands to help us forget the winter and look forward to summer adventures.

Our Top Picks

Santorini certainly has views to fill postcards. Deep-blue Aegean seas and sheer cliffs dotted with white-washed houses complete the serene picture. This volcanic island is considered one of the most beautiful of the group and is an increasingly popular choice. But if relaxing on the beach doesn’t appeal, you’ll also find plenty to see and do in Santorini. Take the cable car journey from port to Fira town (the island's capital), hike the volcanic landscape of Santorini Caldera or indulge in some wine-tasting… delicious! Mykonos balances a party atmosphere with Greek traditions that have stood the test of time. While the main beaches keep sun-worshippers happy; the stylish bars, restaurants and shops draw in a fashionable crowd, and the quiet cobbled streets of the old town offer respite and cultural gems. Corfu, known as the Emerald Island thanks to its lush landscape, is a charming mix of rural villages and bustling tourist resorts. You can wander the maze of streets in the UNESCO world heritage site of Corfu Town, explore the Venetian Old Fortress overlooking the Adriatic sea and sip smooth Greek coffee at a cafe in The Esplanade.

Spend a day exploring Olympia, the birthplace of the Olympic Games and you won’t be disappointed. A short 40-minute drive from Katakolon port (Greece), this important archaeological site remains much as it was in ancient Greece. Walk the flat terrain once pounded by competitors' bare feet, while cheering audiences watched from the grassy slopes of Kronos Hill.

The average Greek has a long life expectancy, partly due to a healthy diet. Join the locals at a Greek tavern where you'll find a homely atmosphere and traditional cuisine. One of the easiest ways to identify a tavern from a restaurant with a Greek menu (aside from the price) is to look at what’s covering the table: if it’s paper it’s a tavern, if it’s cloth it’s a restaurant. Look out for roofless restaurants popping up around Greece to make the most of the fine weather and views as the sun goes down. It's not all lazy lunches and indulgent dinners - if you're short on time look out for Greece’s ‘fast food’ found at a suvlatzidhiko. You can try Greece’s answer to the hamburger also known as souvlakia, a pitta wrap filled with roast meat, tzatziki and salad. Pies are also big business in Greece - a Furnos (pie shop and bakery) is a frequent sight on the streets of most Greek towns. Tiropita (cheese pie) and spanakopita (Spinach pie) are both popular options. Corfu at its best

Round Up

There are hundreds of inhabited islands to explore and thousands of other rocky outcrops in the seas circling Greece. With so many islands to choose from why stop at one? A typical cruise will get you to all the highlights without any forward-planning, so all you need to do is decide how you want to fill your day. And, if you want to set foot on gorgeous Greek lands but also fancy checking out the Turkish coast or the canals of Venice then an island cruise allows you to pack multiple destinations into one holiday!  Be inspired by beautiful coastlines, rich history and culture on our Greek island cruises.
