Go on Location in These Destinations

By HarryMonday 26th September 2016

Explore Akaroa. Explore Akaroa.

Think of every great film you’ve ever seen and you’re sure to remember the amazing scenery which forms the backdrop to its plot. From the luscious rainforests in Jurassic Park to the stunning beaches in Captain Corelli’s Mandolin, film locations are as varied as they are spectacular. Luckily for us and our guests, we sail to some of Hollywood’s most breath-taking film locations, and in this post we’re taking a closer look at a few of them. So, make like a movie star and go on location at these Royal Caribbean destinations.

Akaroa, New Zealand

Film: Lord of the Rings

Around 80km from Christchurch, New Zealand’s Akaroa is equal parts picturesque and charming. It was originally settled by the French, giving the historic town an undeniably French feel, but it’s the surrounding scenery which will leave you in awe. Undulating hills surround the town, transporting you into the other-wordy realm of Middle Earth, as depicted in the film adaptation of Tolkien’s masterpiece. Shore excursion we’d recommend… Journey Into Middle Earth

Argostoli, Greece

Film: Captain Corelli’s Mandolin

Get to know Argostoli. Get to know Argostoli. Located on Kefalonia island, Argostoli has everything you’d expect a Greek island town to have. A pretty harbour, backed by hillside houses, rubs shoulders with beautiful beaches, and there’s a lively buzz about the town centre. As in Louis de Bernières’ book, the 2001 film adaptation was set on the island, in and around Argostoli. Shore excursion we’d recommend… Melissani Cave and Agios Andreas Monastery

St Lucia, Caribbean

Film: Pirates of the Caribbean

Just one of the Caribbean’s beautiful islands, St. Lucia is vibrant in more ways than one. Brightly coloured houses sit amongst luscious greenery, while blue waves lap at soft, sandy shores, and the show-stopping Pitons rise out of the island’s southern tip. It’s amongst this incredible setting that Pirates of the Caribbean, an all-time family favourite, was filmed. Shore excursion we’d recommend… The Island’s Delights

Kauai, Hawaii

Film: Jurassic Park

Adventure in Kauai. Adventure in Kauai. The incredible beauty of Kauai is instantly recognisable as the backdrop for Spielberg’s ever-popular Jurassic Park films. Emerald green mountains rise up from the island, punctuated by gushing rivers and picture-perfect waterfalls, and the stunning coastline offers opportunities for surfing, diving and wildlife-watching. Although you won’t spot any dinosaurs, this magnificent island is sure to take your breath away. Shore excursion we’d recommend… Kauai Mountain Tour

Messina, Italy

Film: The Godfather

At the northern tip of Sicily, a stone’s throw from Italy’s mainland, is a harbour city called Messina. Home to an impressive cathedral and shabby buildings painted in muted colours, Messina is your quintessential Italian city – the perfect setting for the classic mobster film, The Godfather. Visitors can walk the streets where Marlon Brando gave his inimitable performance as Don Vito Corleone, as the Mediterranean sun sits high in the sky. Shore excursion we’d recommend… In the Godfather’s Footsteps
