Getting to know the Greek Islands: Mykonos

By HarryFriday 19th February 2016

Get to know the Greek Islands, starting with Mykonos. Get to know the Greek Islands, starting with Mykonos.

Home to delicious olive oils, picture-perfect beaches and unique traditions, the Greek Islands are counted amongst our favourite destinations. We know these islands like the back of our hand, but how well acquainted are you?

In this series, we’re taking a closer look at the islands, starting with Mykonos.

We’ll be exploring…

Chora (Mykonos Town) Narrow lanes and winding streets mean that the centre of Chora is off-limits to cars, making it perfect to explore on foot. Stop by the Churches of Panagia Paraportiani, climb the hill to the whitewashed Kato Myli (windmills) and stop for a coffee in Little Venice. Ano Mera Whenever we feel like escaping the hustle and bustle of Chora, we head to Ano Mera. Here, in this sleepy village, you’ll find the Panagia Tourliani monastery, which has an impressive bell tower and fountain. After exploring, stop for a bite to eat at one of the traditional tavernas. Explore the winding streets in Chora. Explore the winding streets in Chora.

We’ll be visiting…

The beaches Mykonos has some great beaches dotted along the pristine coastline. For water sports we head to Kalafatis, for family fun we love Platys Gialos, and to get away from it all we go to Agios Ioannis. Whichever beach you choose, sandy stretches and pristine water are guaranteed. Delos Island Just a short boat ride away is Delos, the mythological birthplace of Apollo (God of Music, Light and Prophecy) and his twin sister Artemis (Goddess of the Hunt and Wilderness). The island is home to magnificent ancient ruins – including theatres and temples – and guided tours are available. It’s a great way to spend a day out.

We’ll be looking…

For Petros the Pelican In the late 1950s, fishermen found a wounded pelican off the coast. They brought the pelican back to the island, named him Petros, and he became the official mascot of the island. Although Petros has since passed away, three new pelicans (one called Petros) can be spotted around Chora. Look out for Petros the Pelican. Look out for Petros the Pelican.

We’ll be buying…

Kopanisti Mykonou cheese Both salty and spicy, this unique cheese originates in Mykonos and can be found all over the island. Its creamy texture, combined with the salt and spice, is delicious. Pair with a bottle of ouzo – an aniseed-flavoured aperitif – and you’ve got the perfect souvenir or gift.

We’ll be eating…

Louza Louza is a type of cured meat which can be found on many of the Greek Islands, however, each isle has its own take on this tasty treat. In Mykonos, pork tenderloin is salted, rolled in thyme and black pepper, then left to dry. The result is delicious!

We’ll be watching…

The sunset Sunsets on the Greek Islands are some of the best we’ve ever seen, and each island has its own sweet spot for watching the sun go down. In Mykonos, this sweet spot is in Little Venice. Take a seat at one of the waterfront bars, cocktail in hand, and enjoy! Little Venice at night. Little Venice at night.
