Fun In Philipsburg

By HarryFriday 27th January 2017

Philipsburg, is the capital of the Dutch side of one of the Caribbean’s most stunning islands, Sint Maarten, (the other half is French-governed, where it is spelled Saint-Martin). Popular with shoppers and culture vultures alike, this sun-soaked destination offers a tropical-savannah climate and an abundance of things to do – perfect for an extraordinary retreat! We’re here to give you a hand in choosing the best shore excursions, so you’ll soon see that there’s a lot of fun to be had in Philipsburg!

Relax & Unwind

With crystal blue waters surrounding the island, picture yourself learning a new skill, with the warm breeze in your hair and the water lapping against your boat. If you’re keen to jump in, then strap on your snorkel and slather on the sun cream before immersing yourself in the cool waves to chase schools of multi-coloured fish! Want to relax and forget about the hustle and bustle of everyday life? Prepare yourself for a sun-baked day on the beach with your loved ones. Rent a parasol at Little Bay Beach, reserve your spot on the pristine sands with a towel, and enjoy views of the surrounding mountains, which stand against picturesque townhouses. If you’re one of those people who simply can’t sit still, then take a stroll along the handsome beachside boardwalk, enjoying the abundance of historic sites and natural treasures. The warm scent of the Caribbean air is ideal for those who need to unwind.

At One With Nature

shutterstock_552216484 A historic fort based on the island, Fort Amsterdam is a registered UNESCO World Heritage site that is known to be home to a breeding colony of brown pelicans. Nearly 60 nests are dotted across the site, making it the perfect place for bird-watchers (though be prepared for a climb up a fairly steep hill!). Groups of pelicans are called ‘pods’, and it’s likely you’ll spot one or two flying overhead in the clear blue sky, so keep an eye out, and a camera handy! If you’re a true nature buff, then a trip to St. Maarten Zoo is essential. Home to over 60 species of reptiles, mammals and birds, the exotic animals are representative of the tropics’ biodiversity, with a great number of extremely rare species. Make sure you take the chance to walk through the two aviaries, filled with birds of all colours of the rainbow, for a dream-like experience. Philipsburg’s Butterfly Farm is also perfect for the nature lovers amongst you. Learn more about the mysterious life of butterflies, and marvel as the gorgeously-hued creatures flutter overhead. You’ll learn all about their complex life cycle, from egg-laying to hatching out of their cocoons! Consider the creatures as delicate artistic masterpieces, daintily exploring their way around the island – we’re sure you’ll find watching them is extremely therapeutic.

Shop Until You Drop!

shutterstock_252922921 Philipsburg is the ideal destination for bargain hunters. Shoppers flock to the duty-free shops along Front Street, the island’s mile-long commercial district. The jewellery shops there are extremely enticing to visitors, drawing people in with diamonds and glittering emeralds galore! If you need to quench your thirst for shopping, then we’d recommend putting some holiday money aside and wearing comfortable shoes so you can go on a real treasure hunt!

Enjoy A Bite To Eat

Sint Maarten’s cuisine is as diverse as its people, and it’s known that the island’s inhabitants enjoy recipe swapping, so the food is sure to be scrumptious. Popular authentic delicacies vary, from crabmeat dishes to coconut sweet treats, so if you find yourself hit with a pang of hunger, then you can rely on the fresh aromas from surrounding restaurants to lead you. You’ll never be too far away from a restaurant, and with mouth-watering dishes featuring on every menu, the trickiest part of your trip may well be making the choice of where to eat!

Wild Card Visits

Yoda Guy Movie Exhibit

Any Star Wars fans in the family? Why not do something completely different and visit the Yoda Guy Movie Exhibit? Scattered with Hollywood memorabilia and located on the famous Front Street, the secret museum was founded by Nick Maley, an avid Star Wars fan, and the man who had a part in the creation of the much-loved character, Yoda. The perfect destination for children, the museum is jam-packed with film props and artwork. Feel free to ogle away at everything in store, as the owner is more than happy to answer any questions you may have on the Star Wars films, so remember to make a note to prepare your trivia questions beforehand.

Segway Tour

If you’re in the mood for a tour with a difference, then why not explore the island on a Segway? A unique way of catching the breath-taking sights of the island, it’s incredible fun to enjoy with your family, while you explore the craft markets and attractions together on two wheels.
