Do you spend the winter months dreaming of sunny weather and sandy beaches, wishing you were sipping on a cocktail in a far off place? This winter, Royal Caribbean can help. We’re taking our readers (this means you!) on a journey through the Caribbean, from Mexico’s Mayan ruins to Antigua’s uninhabited islands, to escape the wintery chill and show you some of the unforgettable experiences on offer.

In this blog post, the first in our ‘Escape the Chill’ series, we’re taking a look at the Caribbean’s most musical island: Jamaica.

Quick facts

  • Jamaica is located 145km south of Cuba.
  • It has a population of 2.8 million people.
  • Kingston is the country’s capital.
  • It has a tropical climate – hot and humid – all year round.
  • It is the birthplace of all kinds of music, including reggae and ska.

Attractions

When it comes to attractions visitors to Jamaica are spoilt for choice, as there is so much to see and do. Whether you’re feeling adventurous or lazy, or you’re in the mood for a history lesson, Jamaica has it all. Here are just a few of the options:
  • Rose Hall Great House – Home to the legendary “White Witch”, Annie Palmer, Rose Hall Great House is open both day and night for those who dare to explore its supposedly haunted rooms.
  • Dunn’s River Falls – These amazing waterfalls are a must-visit attraction for anyone who has the pleasure of setting foot on the island. At 55 metres high, 180 metres long and shaped like a giant set of stairs – they’re unbelievable.
  • Blue and John Crow Mountains National Park – Hikers, walkers and explorers, this one’s for you. The beautiful Blue and John Crow Mountains National Park is the perfect place to get some fresh air and discover Jamaica’s unique ecosystem.

Beaches

You can’t go to the Caribbean without visiting the beach – here are a few of Jamaica’s best:
  • Reggae Beach – As one of Jamaica’s less crowded beaches, Reggae beach is a bit of a hidden gem. After dark, the beach is transformed with live music, food stalls and plenty of rum!
  • Doctor’s Cave Beach – Umbrellas, sun loungers and kayaks – these are just a few of the things on offer at Doctor’s Cave Beach. This is great spot for families with young children.

Food and drinks

Prepare to set your taste buds tingling with Jamaica’s many culinary delights:
  • Ackee and salt fish – Made from salt cod, tomatoes, scotch bonnet chilli peppers, onions, spices and, of course, ackee – a fruit similar to a lychee. As Jamaica’s national dish, you have to try it.
  • Rum punch – Jamaican rum may be strong, but it makes for a delicious drink when served in a tropical fruit punch.

Shore excursions

At Royal Caribbean we pride ourselves on giving our guests unforgettable experiences, which is why we have a whole range of shore excursions to suit each and every one of you. Here are two of our Jamaican excursions:
  • A Day at Dolphin CoveSpend a day at Dolphin Cove, swimming with dolphins, braving the 250-foot waterslide and sunbathing on a beachside sun lounger.
  • Flavours of JamaicaSet against the backdrop of the 18th century Great House veranda, you’ll learn how to make traditional jerk chicken, coconut shrimp and other tasty dishes. Then you’ll get to tuck in!

Did you know?

Ian Fleming (famous author of the James Bond novels) built his dream house in Jamaica, which he called Goldeneye. Here he wrote 10 books from the James Bond series.
