Discover the Wildlife of Norway

By HarryWednesday 10th December 2014

A cruise holiday with Royal Caribbean is always an adventure, packed full of incredible WOW moments you’ll never forget, no matter where you go and what you do. But if you’re looking for something a little more on the wild side, set sail for Norway next summer! As you cruise up the stunning Fjords, with their majestic mountain landscapes tumbling down into crystal clear waters, keep your eyes peeled for creatures both high and low.

On Dry Land

14293821915_5bd2b68e94_z During your cruise through the Norwegian Fjords, don’t miss the opportunity to explore the trails running through the valleys with a hiking shore excursion. Whilst you’re walking through the lush forests, be on the look out for native species such as the Eurasian elk, a cousin of North America’s moose. These beautiful creatures can sometimes be spotted roaming through the trees in search of their favourite treats, such as white birch shoots. They’re also quite partial to a variety of aquatic plants, so be sure to keep an eye out for them around lakes and rivers – particularly in the warmer months, when they’re likely to take a refreshing dip in the water to cool off! 13663498105_2907b61d95_z

Under the Sea

5961318915_59ef5547ce_z If you’re fascinated by underwater life, or have a budding marine biologist in the family, then a shore excursion that involves a trip to Scandinavia’s biggest aquarium, such as the ‘Saga Islands & Atlantic Sea Park’ trip in Alesund, should be high on your list. The Atlantic Sea Park aquarium is carved into the rocks of the coastline, where you can watch schools of fish swimming in unison, and penguins at play. On this shore excursion, you’ll also have the chance to learn more about the history of the Vikings who once inhabited the Saga Islands, as well as get the chance to spot native harbour seals and sperm whales off the coast of Norway in the summer. 15538890511_d007f04d76_z

Up in the Air

7857079800_6104a781a3_z No matter where you are or what you’re doing whilst you’re cruising around Norway, remember to keep an eye on the skies to spot some of the majestic native birds. If you’re lucky, you may even spot a white-tailed eagle! They nest all along the coast of Norway, and are incredibly impressive to see in flight, with their wingspan ranging between 5.8 – 8 feet. Whilst you’re scouring the coastline, be sure to look out for the charming puffins that also nest here, with their easily recognisable, brightly coloured beaks; late spring is one of the best times to spot them, as this is when they breed. 9670802679_7a46c926b2_z As well as plenty of opportunities to explore the rugged landscape and spot your favourite animals, you’ll also be able to enjoy the wonderful Explorer of the Seas, which will be enhanced in early 2015 and ready to set sail from the UK, bringing you all the best Royal Caribbean features.
