Discover the Old Country of Montenegro

By HarryMonday 16th October 2017

Montenegro is only two thirds the size of Wales, and is packed with beautiful sights, and things to do. No matter what sort of holiday you are looking for, Montenegro will be your dream destination.

Discover the History of Montenegro

One of the most alluring things about Montenegro in Europe is its rich history. Dating back to Roman times, any part of the country you walk through is steeped in history. One of the most important historical sites you can visit in Montenegro is the Ostrog Monastery, built into the cliffs of the Zeta Valley, 900m above the ground. A million people a year visit the Ostrog Monastery, marvelling at the beauty of the buildings and trying to fathom how, in 1665, they managed to build it. The structure is imbedded into the rocks, and is so impressive it looks like it burst through the cliff face by itself. It’s actually nicknamed Sv Vasilije’s miracle, because it’s such a sight to behold. From high in the skies to underground, the Lipa Cave is a huge warren of underground passages and incredible natural phenomena. Millions of years old, you don’t get much more historic than a guided tour here.

Climb Njegoš Mausoleum

The beautiful landscape of Montenegro is made up of looming green mountains, so many of the activities mean having to stretch your legs a bit! Walk up the 461 steps (it’s worth it) to reach the Njegoš Mausoleum, the tomb of Petar II Petrović-Njegoš, one of Montenegro’s greatest heroes. His tomb is guarded by huge statues of two giantesses, and he is laid to rest in the wings of a black granite eagle. The views from the mausoleum are so incredible that they can literally take your breath away.

Go Back in History in Kotor

Kotor is another shrine to the history of Montenegro, a medieval city sandwiched between mountains and overlooking the sparkling bay below. Walk through the cobblestone streets that lead to museums, bustling cafes and palaces. As well as tourists and locals walking over the cobblestones, hundreds of cats sun themselves on the warm streets.

Dive into the Adriatic Waters

In a coastal country, it would be a travesty not to take a dive in the waters, especially Montenegro’s warm Adriatic Sea. If you are a sun worshiper of simple pleasures, then just relaxing on the beach with a good book is perfect here. But if you’re feeling a little more active, then there’s plenty for you to do, too. Dive into the sapphire waters and swim, scuba dive and sail to really become one with the sea.
