The Best of Bruges

By HarryFriday 26th February 2016

Beautiful Bruges. Beautiful Bruges.

Bruges. It’s a destination that combines gothic architecture, cobbled market squares and picturesque canals to create a fairy tale city that’s beautiful all year round. While not as big as Belgium’s capital, Brussels, Bruges has something to offer every kind of visitor. Whether you’re planning a romantic getaway, or looking for some family fun, Bruges has got it all. Here are just some of Bruges’ best bits.

You can explore on foot

When travelling overseas, the question of how you’re going to get around can be a worry, but in Bruges it doesn’t have to be. The city centre is small enough that you can reach most places on foot, which is perfect if you’re travelling with young children. However, if you do get tired of walking, there are several other ways to get around – see below.

Dumon Chocolatier

You can’t visit Bruges without indulging in Belgium’s finest, and some of the best is found at than Dumon Chocolatier. Let the warm chocolatey smell envelope you, as you enter this chocolate paradise. Here you can sample classic chocolates, contemporary additions and pick up an intricate chocolate figurine… or two! Bruges’ waffles and chocolate are not to be missed. Bruges’ waffles and chocolate are not to be missed.

The Markt

The centrally-located Markt is probably the number one must-see attraction in Bruges, and once you’re there it’s easy to see why. Lined with impressive buildings, including the famous Belfry and the Provincial Court, wandering through the square is a delight. Pick up some Belgian waffles on your way there and grab a seat beneath the square’s statue.

De Halve Maan Brewery

If you’ve ever read anything on Bruges you’ll know that it’s a beer lover’s dream come true. Go to any bar and there’ll be countless beers on offer, from the traditional to the unusual. If you want to experience beer in a little more depth, head to De Halve Maan Brewery, where you can learn everything there is to know about making beer.

You can take a canal boat ride

While you can explore most of Bruges on foot, a canal boat ride is a must. Canals wind through the city, past beautiful buildings and under cobbled footbridges, and a canal boat ride is a great way to spend an afternoon or morning. Choose from the many canal-side vendors and explore Bruges from a whole new angle. Plus, the kids will love it! When in Bruges, take a canal boat ride. When in Bruges, take a canal boat ride.

Groeningemuseum

There are several art museums in Bruges, but the Groeningemuseum is, without a doubt, one of the best. Featuring works by Flemish artists, including Hans Memling and Jan van Eyck, and international artists, the Groeningemuseum is a wonderful place to visit. Travelling with kids? No problem. The gallery is small enough that the little ones won’t have time to get bored.

You can take a horse and carriage ride

If you’ve had enough walking and you’ve already taken a canal boat, it’s probably time you jumped on a horse drawn carriage. These can be found throughout the city, and they’re a fantastic way to get around, especially if you’ve got children. The driver will take you to all of the main sights, offering plenty of interesting information along the way.

Princely Béguinage Ten Wijngaerde

Once the home of Christian Beguines and now the home of Benedictines, the Princely Béguinage Ten Wijngaerde is well worth the visit. Along with its beautiful buildings and church, it has a lovely outside area, complete with daffodils in spring. Gather some fresh bread and cheese and take the kids there for a family picnic.
