Beat the Back to School Blues with a Dream Holiday

By HarryTuesday 26th September 2017

After six long weeks away from getting your children up early, and overseeing homework, getting back into a new routine can be a shock to the system. No wonder the school run is spent dreaming of far-flung exotic lands, away from the traffic and piles of uniform needing to be washed. Check out our top destinations to visit during the school break, so you and your family can make it through term time.

Sunshine in the Canaries

When you sun yourself in the Canary Islands, impress everyone with the fun fact that the islands weren’t actually named for the little yellow birds. It comes from the Latin word for dog, ‘canaria’. The islands are sunny all year long, so there is no bad time to visit. They are mysterious, and beautiful destinations that offer much more than just a warm stretch of sand to lounge on (although, the beaches are a must-visit). Tenerife is home to looming pyramids that are yours to explore. And feel the heat in Lanzarote thanks to its 300 volcanoes. The wildlife of the Canary Islands is a draw for any nature lover; keep your fingers crossed that you see whales and dolphins jumping up out of the sea. The Canary Islands let you explore and relax on the beach, so you can forget all about PTA meetings and chemistry experiments. Just a good book and a bottle of sun cream is all you need.

Explore the Western Mediterranean

The best thing about the Western Mediterranean, is that even though it’s no longer school term, it doesn’t mean that you and your children can’t learn something new. On this journey, you will visit the most beautiful historic sites, as well as escaping the sun’s glare in some shaded cafes. For the best of both worlds (stunning beaches and a fantastic cultural city to walk through), Barcelona is the best place to go. Visiting the Barcelona Cathedral is a given, but also take time to explore the backstreets too, and find some hidden gems of your own. In Italy, walk in the Romans’ footsteps, visiting the world-famous Colosseum and Roman Forum. In Florence, see the world through the eyes of the greatest artists who ever lived at the Uffizi Gallery and Galleria dell'Accademia. The former is one of the most renowned art galleries in the world, and the latter is home to Michelangelo’s David.

Live Like Tolstoy in Scandinavia and Russia

If lounging on a beach isn’t exactly your thing, then don’t worry, there is still the perfect holiday for you. Why not dig out your winter coats and discover beautiful destinations including Norway, Sweden and Russia. Each Scandinavian and Baltic country has its own personality, culture and vibe. Denmark’s capital, Copenhagen, is known for being a hip and vibrant young city. Walk along the canal by the multi-coloured houses, and pay a visit to Hans Christian Andersen’s Little Mermaid, sitting mournfully on a rock. Norway boasts the most incredible natural landscape, with fjords, lakes and mountains providing you with jaw dropping views. Or, walk through the pages of classic Russian literature in St. Petersburg, and fall in love with the beautiful Hermitage and St. Isaac’s Cathedral. The city is connected by dozens of bridges, many of which are quite beautiful. Make sure you get a shot of the golden-winged griffons at Bank Bridge.
Do you think these destinations are enough to rejuvenate you and help shake off those back-to-school blues? Start planning your half-term break by exploring our holiday destinations.
