A Taste of the Caribbean

A Taste of the Caribbean

Do you love to sample the local delights of your cruise’s destination? The Caribbean is a great place for food, and because it’s been influenced by so many cultures and communities from around the world the food is twice as delicious! We can’t wait for you to try it on your next cruise holiday, but until then Royal Caribbean will guide you through some of the tastiest dishes in the Caribbean.

Caribbean cooking

On your cruise to the Caribbean you can dock at our private Haitian island of Labadee. The blissful beauty of the island is one of the main attractions, with its turquoise sea and golden shores it makes for the perfect getaway. The food is another great reason to visit Haiti. Manje Ayisien, or Haitian food, is usually presented as a brightly coloured mixture of fresh herbs, peppers and spices. If you and your family are on the island for the day, try out the local favourite of diri kole ak pwa, or rice and beans, served on the side of a rich meat stew.  And, if you’re all still hungry after that, why not try out some fried yams or breadfruit; they’re great as mid-afternoon snacks. If you travel a little further along the coast you’ll reach Barbados, another picturesque island of beautiful beaches and crystal clear sea, and a great place for snorkelling over shipwrecks with your kids. It’s also another great place for Caribbean food. The coastal location means that delicious seafood is always on the menu; even the national dish is flying fish and cou-cou (a mix of corn flour and okra). If seafood isn’t your thing, then take a stroll along the streets and try out the local vendors where you’ll find fresh fruit, vegetables and grilled meats. And if your kids have a sweet tooth, treat them to tamarind balls – a very yummy dessert! In the middle of the Caribbean is Jamaica, where coconuts, mango juice and ackee and saltfish can be found at every corner. Over the years Jamaican food has been influenced by Spain, Britain, Africa, India, and China, and as result you can enjoy mouth-watering meals, such as bowls of goat curry with rice and beans.  Take advantage of Jamaica’s beautiful beaches and plan a picnic by the sea. Jamaican patties make a perfect lunch, and Gizzadas, small tarts filled with sweetly spiced coconut, are a sweet treat for the kids. Soursop coconut milk ice cream is great for keeping the kids cool in the sun, and an ice cold Jamaican beer will help you too. Forget about the Tex-Mex you and your family eat back home, traditional Mexican food is so much fresher and tastier. Juicy limes, beans, corn and spicy chillies are used in many dishes, from street food to haute cuisine. Like Barbados, the Mexico cities and towns by the coast love fresh fish and seafood and this can be found in classics snacks, such as tacos. Don’t worry if you’re not a seafood fan, quesadillas, tamales and delicious pambazos can be found across Mexico, and are make a tasty lunch for you and your family.
