8 Hours on the Amalfi Coast

By HarryFriday 29th July 2016

The beauty of the Amalfi Coast awaits. The beauty of the Amalfi Coast awaits.

Pastel-coloured villages perch on sheer cliff faces. Sandy beaches meet crystal-clear waters. Weather-beaten boats move in and out of small fishing harbours. Welcome to the Amalfi Coast. This 50-kilometre stretch of Italian coastline attracts countless visitors, who come to witness its immense beauty and experience all it has to offer.

On a Royal Caribbean Mediterranean cruise, Salerno, on the Amalfi Coast, is just one of the breath-taking destinations you can visit. In this post, we’re taking a look at how you can spend eight hours in Amalfi heaven.

Mount Vesuvius And Pompeii Hike shore excursion

Time: 6 hours, 45 minutes
A little less than two hours’ drive from Salerno is the world-famous Mount Vesuvius. During this adventurous excursion, you’ll be driven up the volcano’s slopes to about 3,000 feet. From here, your guide will take you to the crater’s edge for incredible views you’ll never forget. Next, you’ll visit the magnificent ruins of Pompeii, a Roman city which was destroyed by Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, and you’ll learn all about its history.

A day out in Capri

Time: 8 hours
Just off the coast of Italy, in the Gulf of Naples, is a small island called Capri. Perfect for a lovely day out in the sun, Capri has pretty beaches, grand villas, tempting restaurants and designer boutiques. So how do you get there? Ferries run frequently from Salerno to Capri – the journey takes about 1 hour, 30 minutes – so you can spend the whole day exploring this beautiful island.
Take a dip in Capri’s beautiful blue waters. Take a dip in Capri’s beautiful blue waters.

Sorrento On Your Own shore excursion

Time: 7 hours, 30 minutes
This part of Italy is dotted with beautiful towns to visit – you’re spoilt for choice. One of our favourites is Sorrento. This all-day excursion will take you from Salerno to Sorrento, past the lovely scenery of the Bay of Salerno along the way. Once there, you can start exploring. Visit the Chiesa di San Francesco, a lovely old church, stroll along the Marina Grande harbour, and stop for a bite to eat at one of the many delightful cafés.

Relax in Salerno

Time: 8 hours
If you don’t want to travel, you can hop off the ship and explore Salerno itself. This large port city has plenty to offer visitors, from the impressive duomo (cathedral) to the medieval Castello di Arechi, which overlooks the city. There are many eateries to choose from, where you can sample delicious, local seafood, and the Villa Comunale di Salerno park is a great spot for a quick break from the afternoon sun.

Villa Massa Limoncello Tasting and Tour shore excursion

Time: 5 hours
Limoncello is a lemon-flavoured liqueur which is a regional speciality in this part of Italy. On this shore excursion to Sorrento’s Villa Massa limoncello laboratory, you’ll see how this delicious after-dinner drink is made, and you’ll get to sample it as well. You’ll take a walk through their fragrant lemon groves, where a tour guide will tell you all about this tasty tipple, and then you’ll enjoy samples of limoncello and other fruit liqueurs as you look out over the Bay of Sorrento.
